If anyone needs a utility to convert CRW images to other forms on Mac OS X, check out the program CRW on my web site.

http://www-cs.canisius.edu/~leitgebj/crw/

It's an open source program originally written for freeBSD, but I made a really quick change to it and compiled it for Mac OS X. I've had very good luck with it so far, let me know how it works for you.

(If you're confused about everything on my page, just download the binary I provide)

Errr.......can you help we OS X users in terms of what to DO with this binary code?
As in...how do we actually install it? Do we need to be UNIX savvy?
HELP!
Thanks,
Pete Stone

Sure... hang on a few minutes. Try to keep in mind that I'm fairly Unix - savvy, but I've only been using a Mac for 2 weeks (e.g., I'm clueless). However, it's really a simple matter to run the program on an image to get a PNG file from the CRW.

OK, I tried to make my page a little more readable for non Unix people. Take a look and see what you can get out of it. Let me know if it's still completely incomprehensible.

Thanks! I'll try it out tomorrow AM. One more thing...when you say put the file in a directory labeled "bin"...can I just create a file folder of that name in OS X ? Thanks,
Pete Stone

this is way cool...I just tried it, but I got an error saying

dyld: . crw can't open library: sw/lib/libpng.2.dylib (No such file or directory, errno = 2)

I did a search on my OS X partition but can't find a file called 'libpng.2.dylib', any ideas?

Thanks,
Saiwing

This will be very cool.

I am getting a permission denied error in the terminal window.

Any ideas?

Hey Justin, et al,

I went over the installation process for crw in OS X about a month ago in this thread: http://www.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1019&message=2908698

It too is described from a UNIX perspective, but hopefully it will help with some of the problems people are having here.

I'm getting the same permission denied message in the terminal window when I try to run this.

Yes, you should be able to just create the folder "bin" in OS X. When you see a ~ in my documentation that refers to your home directory (it's a Unix thing).

So to create bin the Mac OS X way (as opposed to the Unix way in terminal), open the Macintosh HD, then click on "home". The folder labeled bin should be visible here. Make sure that it is all lower - case - Unix (and Mac OS X) are CASE SENSITIVE.

Yup, see the FAQ I just posted on my CRW page.

http://www-cs.canisius.edu/~leitgebj/crw/

Let me know if this works or doesn't work... email is fine:

[email protected]

then I can more easily post answers to questions on the faq.

Is this program any better than Canon's RAW converter running in Classic mode? I mean other than the convenience of staying in OSX (and that's debatable with all the UNIX complications) do the pictures actually come out looking any better or are they they same?

Nate,

I checked out your post on the other thread and I am LOST...

Can you put the steps into simple terms.

I have installed image magic and crw ( at least, I think I have).

I cannot find a folder on my hard drive for image magic gut the install went through OK.

I am still getting the error.

Thanks for helping the Unix infants.

Todd - I'm in the same boat. Installed Imagemagick and can only find the package in the library/receipts folder. Nothing else installed. I think we are supposed to download yet another unix app (Fink) that will install the Imagemagick pckg, but I'm giving it up at this point and waiting until someone provides an OS X app with a gui.

Hey Todd,

All the steps are done from the command prompt, ie through Terminal. Unless you can find a packaged version of libpng then I'm not sure how to do it otherwise. Actually, Google just turned up this page which has just that: http://macosx.forked.net/ If you install libpng from there then you should be able to follow Justin's HOWTO without any problems.
