I'm interested in hearing from people who have used this lens, the 105 vr macro.
But not just as a macro but also as kind of a 'walk-around' too.
How does it focus on longer distance?
Infinity?

I would also like to ask if anyone has compared it to the 150mm sigma.
Both in terms of its macro and longer distance capabilities.

Very good lens but be ready for some AF hunting.

http://foto.pudele.com/ - Low intensity blog about photography, Nikon and some other stuff interesting to me. Just for fun. In Latvian.

I like commenting on this particular lens , because I think its an amzing lens, which Iuse quite often I's uit eversatile for a prime, IMO.

As a macro , the results are , of course excellent , beautiful bokeh , in fact I prefered it to the 85/1.4. Vr is not really ideal if you want to take 1x1 macro shots, but for over 3 ft away it starts becoming more effective , as a general mid tele lens its just great , its one of those primes that get almost optimally sharp , edge to edge from wide open , though I do prefer to half stop it just to play safe , I used it quite extensively in my last visit to Berlin , where I had a chance to really appreciate it useability, in museums , for macro and for general street and architecturals. Its AFS is not super fast in lower light conditions, so Im not sure its the ideal lens for fast sports.

I'll place here some images just to demonstrate what I've said so far , but you may have a look in my Berlin folder in pbase

The following image was one of may I took in museums , it was taken at f3.3, 1/40s iso 1000, its very sharp though most of the statues here are behind glass , so cannot be ideal for photography yet I liked the results.

This was taken at night with all lights lashing abuot , yet it takes it quite easilly
It was taken, though on a tripod

.. and this was one was taken in a Musoleum with VR on at f4 and 1/100s iso 800

and this one in a museum, with vr on at 1/40s f4 iso640 ,

I actually PREFER to use the 105VR as a walk-around medium telephoto rather than a macro. Autofocus is fast. The lens is super sharp. Though I don't have many samples of portraits, it is great for those too. There are more images from the 105vr in my flickr page, but these are some of my favorites.

Wow nice shots, gives me a new perspective on the 105 as a telephoto. Add and extension tube and you have yourself one razor sharp long lens.

Nice thread with some very nice pictures. I'm getting closer to pulling the trigger on this lens (Need something for when the flowers start blooming)

Anyone have samples of this lens on a D700?

I would also like to ask if anyone has compared it to the 150mm sigma.
I used to have Canon 100 f2.8 and Sigma 150 f2.8 for Canon. The Nikon 105 f2.8 is at least as sharp. Actually, all macro lenses I used are very sharp. The difference of the Nikon 105 and Sigma 150 will be mainly on the background. The longer focal length gives you a narrower background, typically makes it simpler and more pleasing which is my preference many time. For close ups, I'd pick 150 over 105, and 180/200 over 150.

However, I don't buy a macro lens just for macro. This is the place the VR become super useful. I was shooting butterflies in a theme park last year. With the Nikon 105 VR, I don't need my tripod any more. I have also see great portrait from this lens.

There is another benefit for using the 105 VR for general purpose shooting. Since it's a macro lens, the lens is engineered to have best flat field performance, it's sharp from center to the sides. I have compared the 105 VR to the famous Nikon 70-200 VR. In the center, the 70-200 is very sharp, however, when you look toward the edge, there is really no comparison to the 105 VR.

Eric.

How did you compare the 105 VR to 70-200VR?

I mean, did you compare the zoom set at the same focal length (105 mm)? and at which apertures? And did you use DX or FX?
Thanx.

having both I sold the 105vr as
  • I found the colours out of the Sigma better
  • I like you can limit to macro/full/tele rather than just macro/full
  • Not very different size and weight considering 50mm longer focal length
  • tripod mount - considering the weight of both these lenses it is usefull
  • better working distance obviously
  • vr not a big thing for me
I guess it is also a focal length thing for me, as in the end I prefer the longer 150mm and a 50mm macro than the 105mm macro..
