What's in a name?

I've decided that I should get another website for myself. One that'll be just for my photos that I think are some of my best, and to use along with any future business I may set up. Initially I'd just have business cards set up with this company name, that would have the URL on it. Along with an email like [email protected] or [email protected] .. I'd set up this email account to just forward to my real email account.

PS -- readyhosting.com seems to have a pretty good deal. $99 a year for 500 MB of space, unlimited bandwith (unless you start shutting down the server -- LOL -- so no porn sites, probably), unlimited emails, AND they pay for your registration (as long as it's a new name that they set up).

Now for the hard part. Coming up with a name.

I could always "steal" from Steve Mitchell and use something lilke DigiConcertPix.com . . . . but he'd probably sue me! ;)

Or I could try something more clever like TwangThangPhotos.com . . . but a songwriter in Nashville already has TwangThang as his band name and publishing name.

But, those two names show the two different conflicting types of names I'm considering:

1) a name that basically says what I do (concert photography)

2) a name that's a bit more clever, and is geared more towards the type of music I like to photograph

I'd love to combine the two styles, but I'm not quite sure how well that'd turn out. TwangThangConcertPix.com . . . . hmmmmmmmm.

That works (I wouldn't use TwangThang because I know somebody that has it . . . but you get the picture), but then I have an awfully long URL name.

Thoughts?

I'm leaning, I guess, towards something like the latter, even though it means a long URL name.

If I chose a name (let's use Twang Thang as an example), would it be advisable to have the name of the business be

Twang Thang Photography and Video (the "and video" I'm still thinking about), but a URL name of TwangThangConcertPix.com ?

Or is it better to have the URL name and the business name match more closely?

eg,

Twang Thang Photo

and

TwangThangPhoto.com

?

I went through a similar situation last month... trying to come up with a name for a Website that has some personality and functionality.

I decided on agtadiurna.com ... go to my site to learn what it means.

But in considering the many, many names on my "list" of ideas, I realized that it's important to integrate and adapt old ideas in a new way (what I did). I wanted something obscure that had a specific meaning in relation to my interests and what I like to do.

For instance (this may sound cheesy), have you thought adapting some musical term/jargon? Something like "TrebleClefPhoto.com" ... "BassClefPhoto.com" ...? Go with something that makes a statement about what you do, who you are and what your business is all about.

This may be a pointless post, but I'm in a strange mood today.

It's hardly "pointless". Good idea. I'm not wild about those two particular names, but that's the kind of thing I'm looking for. I think.

How about:

AShotInTheDarkPhotos.com ? ;)

IF your on a decent broadband connection, just make your own server with unlimited space. My site doens't get that many hits (www.convectionconnection.com) and being on cable even with a 32kb/s upload cap... it works fine. My server runs on a old amd k6 300mhz with 128mb ram.... just used our old computer. I run win2k with apache on it, and it works great. Sure theres a bit more time involved, but I'd rather do that then spend $99 a year.

The big problem here is that not every internet provider allows for hosting a server from home.

Mine doesn't (or didn't, I guess I should-recheck that).

So, that "little bit of time" coudld turn into 6 months to a year behind bars, maybe. ;)

Since your initials are DP how about DPix.com? It's short, catchy, easy to remember and it kinda sounds like the word depicts (to represent, portray or picture). Just a thought from the Woodlands where it's tough to get a DSLR into the concerts.

I'm no expert at this, but it looks pretty good to me.

Typical domain name registration is $35/year so that means are only paying about $64 more for the Hosting. For that the people accessing (knowing DaveP) pictures get Megabytes per second (I expect) rather than 10's of Kilobytes to download, pictures. 32K is a joke for pictures, plus if somebody goes to your site they suck you dry for upload.

Yahoo Domains charges $14.95 per month and you only get 100Meg of disk space for their "basic" setup. I currently only have then $35/year starter set up with no disk space so I am looking for somebody else to host. I love the fact that I own my domain name. I have been through 2 carriers plus the ATT @home fiasco about a year ago and I did not loose any email, nor did I have to send out a bunch of emails telling everyone my new email address, but I want to get a web site going for my family and for my business.

I decided to snoop around the web and see what their rating might be. I found this site that rates web hosts. I don't know anything about the rating site but 3 on a 10 point scale does not sound good.

Woops. Too late. I already signed up.

Oh, well. We'll see how it goes.

PS -- this is the name I chose:

http://www.NeonLightsImaging.com

It should be up in a day or so. Of course, there'll be nothing on it just yet. LOL.

the URL I've now registered and set-up is:

http://www.NeonLightsImaging.com

It won't be setup for a day or two, and I doubt I'll have anything out there at all before the weekend.

The first order of business will be getting the OK from Jon Michaels (who I video-taped) to give me permission to put the video I made for him (11 minutes) on the site as an example of the video work I do. Considering how little I charged him, and the fact that he's gonna have it on his own website, it shouldn't be a problem.

And then I just gotta go pick out a bunch of my BEST stuff, then do some serious photoshop work on those pics.

Anybody that knows of some of my shots that they think are just GREAT, send me an email to let me know about them. I've probably got a dozen in mind so far.

And now to design a business card. With a name like Neon Lights Imaging, it's gonna HAVE to be in color. :)

I did a quick check and pennybakerphotos.com is available as is countryconcertpics.com. Something simple, like your name and photos would work. If you do something like http://www.thatguywhokeepsgettingkickedoffofthedpreviewforums.com , it becomes a little tricky for people to remember. You can do searches at http://www.domaindirect.com
BTW, didn't know you were a Texas boy.

Try http://www.powweb.com . I've used them for about 5 months now to register 2 domains, and host the websites. Been very happy. You can check out one of my sites if you want - http://www.brianheadmusicfestival.com . I'm not a pro web designer, but you can sorta "test" out a host sometimes by looking at one of their websites.

$15 domain registrations
250 MB of storage, 25 Gig or monthly transfer
99.99 % uptime

(only been down a total of 5 hours over those 5 months. My att cable ISP has been down more than that! Plus, I don't like having to keep my computer turned on 24/7)

Jim

p.s. I think dpix.com is the best suggestion so far! clever! or how about twangypix.com? DPfotos.com? best_of_DP_twang.com?

make that

http://www.NeonLightsImaging.com

keep forgetting the http://www . . . . my current domain name doesn't have that in it.
BTW, the name is

Domain names -never- have "www." in them. The "www" is a hostname, not domain name. A URL may or may not have "www." in it. I normally setup the domains we host to work with or without the "www.".

Sorry, just my anal side coming out here...

already registered, in 1996. It's extremely rare to find any sane 4 letter domains still left. I've got a two letter domain (be.nu). I get regular inquiries from people in Belgium that want to buy it.
