Poll: Should Shay write a book?

IMHO, Shay should build a website containing the tips and information that he is so filled with. He could then sell advertising on the site, and market his own prints on the site.

Using a website the information would be much more current, and generate a better ROI than a book. Royalties(10% if you are lucky) on computer books are rediculously low, especially since computer/photography books have such a short shelf life. A well executed web site utilizing ad revenue and another source of income(subscription service, prints, etc) is alot of times much better than a book.
...the contract that he would sign for a book deal would probably
state that he couldn't give free advice in this forum.

Instead of an entire book, which would be difficult to keep up-to-date, how about if we get Shay to write a technical whitepaper on using the 707, and post-editing with PS?

A whitepaper wouldn't take him that long to write, and he could still sell it as he sees fit. I'm personally very unhappy with the books out there on beginning digital photography. I'd rather a paper that specializes on the 707 and how to post-edit my shots.

So, who's gonna make Shay do it? I'll gladly pay for a copy.

Well I spent a few hours at a local bookstore. I was looking at
some PS books. 7.0, 6.0 and Elements. I couldn't find any that I
really wanted. Not as intuitive as Shay's examples. Maybe Shay
just spoils us. Anyway, this poll is a two parter.

1. Should he write a book?
2. Would you buy it?

This is way off topic, but I have it in the back of my mind that this forum's two most valuable contributors -- Shay and Ulysses -- are actually the same person.

Think about it. : )

Which would be really quite remarkable when you consider the level of knowledge and generosity that they both offer, all to be coming from the same person.

So, if Shay were to write a book, what should he write about?
1. Photography
2. Image editing

And who is the book for, exactly?
And how would you recommend he keep this book sufficiently current?

The best to you!

ybnormal wrote,

If he did that, we would miss his expertise & candor. He's too big an asset to us, why share him. Others from other Forums would be deludging him with needless banter(to us on the STF) & questions (hmmm... that sounds like me). Then the Camera Makers would send Him cameras to try and when would he have time for us! lol

Only kidding Shay.. I love your posts & I wish you the best! I have learned more from you & your practical experiences than I ever read in books. ;-D Shayron

Has anyone even asked Shay, maybe he doesn't want to. Maybe, he woud do it for free? How about it Shay, just put in a word document or pdf format and share your knowledge with us!
With his celebrity at STF, I'd be interesting in knowing how Shay
manages to keep his ego in check. or does he?

Hi Ulysses,

I think if the people are going to pressure the man into writing a book, we could at least help him start it off, so here ya go Shay.

He Is No Fool Who Gives Up What He Cannot Keep For That Which He Cannot Lose.

1. Website
2. CD
3. White paper.

I don't want to pressure Shay into a book deal, I just wanted him to see that he has the support from us IF he were to write something. Kinda like a "pre-order" status.

Here is his profession "Profession=Photographer & Web Developer "

My thinking is this:

Shay could develop a website where we log in and get tips. I am willing to "subscribe" to his site, say a yearly fee. Every week/month whatever he posts new techniques and we (the subscribers) get homework. If you wanted the techniques mailed to you, then for an extra fee, he would burn it on a cd.

If you notice quite a few photographers offer their techniques for free (which he does now) and then when you pay for the techniques, you get more detail, more examples and also homework. I believe that Shay should be compensated for his teachings. He IS very good. He has a talent which I am willing to pay for. Look at his photos, website and technical assistance. I think this could be a great venture for him. It would also be a lot of work.

As far as Ulysses goes, I can see him contributing a weekly update on current events in the digicam world. There is nothing that Ulysses doesn't find. He too is ALWAYS willing to share his ideas. Lets see if we can all work something out if Shay is willing to expand on this "idea". If not, I will still enjoy the GREAT advice he gives and will continue learning from him and everyone else here.

Thanks everyone! :-)

I knew it. You ARE up to something. You marketing guru you.

Yeah! ;-)
I regret to inform you all that I can neither confirm, nor deny any
of the following:
Writing a book,
Being the alter ego of Ulysses,
Controlling my ego via hyperbaric chambers, or
The percentage of the moon that is really made of cheese.

Shay, how much do you want for your book you are writing? I am interested in being educated.
