Contest (pic)

Yearly contests are coming up in my area and I'm trying to get
16x20s ready. I honestly can't make up my mind which of the two
pictures below would have the best chance in the Color Division ,
"People" category. Of the two, which would you enter?
Number One

Or Number Two

If you'd be so kind as to give an opinion I'd appreciate it. You
can simply change the "Subject" line above to answer and put (nt)
"no text".
Thanks

the light in her eyes... it shows hope, anticipation, emotion...all the things that little children are known for. The brightness.. looking towards the light. Very crisp pic.. wide range of colouring from the blue of her eyes to the pinks of her lips. No doubt in my mind as a viewer... Cheers, Sandi

For me, No 2 wins ! not talking of the color or clarity of the eyes... but the "shapes", the skin, the disposition of the picture... I do prefer the second one !

Number 2 based on much more diffused natural look..

Jarrell,

The second one or the bottom one, speaks volumes. The second shot moves from the softness of the blanket to the sharpness of the eyes. Very nice transition, holding the content throughout. Skin tones in the first are not consistent and I believe the color of the eyes is truer in the second shot. Good luck no matter what you choose. No. 2 is my vote.

Number 1. I think she has this wonderfull look of wonder in her face. Number two while a nice shot doesn't show as much expression. The judges may fel the same way.

In that case, I vote number two; makes you think that something heavy is weighing on her

mind. It opens up so much more to the viewer; art is supposed to make you think, not just be pretty. As far as the judges, just tell them your theory on your artwork, they love that sort of thing. Read Tom Wolfs "The Painted Word"

Jerrell,

I decided to make my pick before reading any follow-up posts so as not to color my judgement.

I prefer #1 (they are both excellent).

My reasoning - in our western culture, a flow from left to right seems more natural.

Also, the color flow from dark in the lower left to light in the upper right seems consistent with the gaze of those beautiful blue eyes.

Break a leg! (or does that only apply to theater?) :-)

It draws the attention right to the eyes as the focal point of the picture. The eyes tell a story in this picture.

The second one has some of the same qualities, however, the one thing that kept bothering me about it was I kept drifting to the highlites at the bottom left of the picture. It was competing for my attention with the rest of the picture.

As always, your photographs are great and I hope you do well in the competition.

Regards,

Chip
