Just curious......
How many D100 owners are truly ecstatic about their purchase?

I get an overall sense of euphoria from Many owners of other DSLR cameras..... Of course not everyone's happy, but I'd like to get a feel for just how many are happy with the D100.

Thanks

I have upgraded from an E10 mainly because of the battery limitations and because I wanted more detailed images. Both those requirements have been met.

The D100 is also a joy to use because it responds so much faster than the E10.

The only complaint I have is it has so many options it will take a while to figure out the best way to use it.

… let’s see.

I bought the grip and the flash and I think they are one excellent team. They consistently outdo the (my) D1x and perform better and the D1x with the new flash. Score =A+!

It has better low light dynamic close focus ability – thus extending it’s P&S abilities further than the D1x. Score =A+!

Its focusing abilities in general is impressive – it will hunt a little more than the X and it does not have the really low light capabilities that the X possesses. It tracks surprisingly well – for me at least – it does not do this was well as the X but it is accurate enough – different lens play a huge part here. Score =B+!

Its metering is excellent and it responds to user commands very well, if I think it needs a touch under or over – it usually does and I can see it on the screen. Score =A+!

Controls are pretty easy and are more accessible and clear than on the X – they are not for everybody and I don’t actually “LIKE” them but they work surprisingly well and that’s the important thing – once one knows them naturally. Score =B+!

Battery performance – what’s higher than A+++ brilliant.

So far ease of use, reliability and accuracy in image capture cannot be faulted – my wife had a hard time with the E10 when she had to do small assignments for me when I was elsewhere. Her FIRST solo with the D100 earned her a commendation from our Editor – what’s that worth? – It’s priceless. Score? Another what’s higher than A+++ brilliant!!!

Hi,

I AM ECSTATIC!!!!

I had an Olympus C2500L prior to my purchase of the D100.

The features in some way overwhelm me now that I can start doing some serious digital photography. I will be putting up some pics on my site soon

Although I am very happy with the camera, it is a step down in speed from what I am used to. (My other camera is the Nikon D1H). So I can't say that I am ecstatic.

I am very happy with the D100 (extremely happy actually)
This is my first digital camera of any sort, (I owned F5, and F100)
This camera give me a chance to play to my lovely DeFocus 135mm/f2 D,
with all different kinds of setting, and once I get the setting I want
I can keep it in the CF, and also I can apply what I have learned to my
F5 and F100. DeFocus lens is a very unique lens to play with.

Isn’t it inevitable that you get a new toy and have one of the busiest weeks of your life? I received my D100 on Saturday and now five days later I’ve still only taken about 100 pictures. Overall I’m pleased with my selection. I’ve shot Nikon film cameras for 25 years and I love the feel of the D100.

I’ve seen some of the sharpness problems myself, but it’s too early for me to say it’s a real issue. I haven’t taken the time to print images and really determine how they compare to my 35mm film experience. I made money as a car racing photographer for 15 years, but I don’t consider myself a pro. I’m an amateur and that’s fine with me.

Last night I mounted the D100 on my very old Celestron 8” telescope (2,000mm lens equivalent (F10) and shot a couple of moon images. They’re not great, definitely not as sharp as could be expected, but I attribute most of that to my quick set-up and the difficulty focusing through the telescope. Hey, I had fun, and for me that’s what counts.

I'm happy enough to replace my film SLR for a charity event I'm shooting on Thursday night (not a pro just a volunteer). The combo of the D100 and SB-80 seems like it is going to do a great job. The only thing I'm debating at this point is how to shoot for this event (NEF vs JPG, MODE I or II etc). I'll let you know on Friday if I made the right choice :)

John, those are really good, despite your caveats. Remember, in addition to the camera set up, scope alignment, and focus, you have atmospherics to deal with.

As to the D100, I am pleased. Ecstatic? Almost, as I have more learning and using to do. However, I am coming from an E10 which always let me down on focusing, and the Sony 707, which never did and had an excellent battery life. The D100 has great ergonomics like the E10, great color like the E10, is very quick to focus with little hunting, is accurate at focusing, and has the battery life of the Sony. In addition, it has the flexibility of an SLR, the ability to use cf microdrives and other large capacity memory. Did I mention the battery life? I wonder why Nikon even bothered to include a charger? Will the battery EVER run down?? 200 shots with a 1 gig microdrive, lots of menu use and shot review, use of the onboard flash with 55 shots, and downloading the pictures, and it is still showing a full charge. One thing the Sony did do is show you the percentage of charge remaining, that was a nice feature. I also think the onboard flash is the best I've seen on a camera. I bought the SB80Dx, but haven't had time to learn how to use it yet, but the on board flash, combined with exposure adjustments in NC3 yield pretty good shots.

A great camera.
+build
+battery life
+performance with NEF
+sensitivity
+menus & ease of use

After some thinking and comparison with my D1x, I havea theory that 6MP sensors are at their limits given their current surface area and ability of lenses to resolve. To really improve, the sensors need to increase surface area as well as density of photosites and move to non-Bayer technology... my 2 yen opinion anyway.

This camera is, by the way, just as sharp as a D1x - with the same lenses.

I Am very happy with my D100

Great!!!!!!!!!!! Value and everything!!!!!!!

Fast focusing with 18-35mm D lens
super fast with 300mm. G lens
Sharp with 105 Macro..

And bateery life is almost three times of my G2...
Sharpness???? Very sharp result after a lot of testing and study with it!!!

D100... "The more you know (Learn) about using it! The more you Love it!!!"

Bravo!

Ecstatic - YES! Now to move to the next step (elated?), just a couple things I'd need for the "amateurish" things I do.
  • An 8 (or more) frame NEF buffer
  • Faster compressed NEF write times
(Yeah I know, I could shoot uncompressed and
buy another 512 Ridata...)

Pencil me in as "truly Ecstatic."

I thoroughly enjoy my N70 film camera and almost hate to set it aside. But I've been sitting on the sidelines about digital ever since the D1 came out waiting for an 'affordable' DSLR.

The D100 is it for me.

The cp995 is nice and will be used for different occasions and macros. (Hard to beat that swivel design) But the D100 will now be the workhorse. Truly a wonderful camera. Still exploring several different settings and finding what works best for me. I've decided AdobeRGB will be my default color mode.

If you're sitting on the fence trying to decide whether to take the plunge ... jump on in!

Like others have said the SB-80dx flash works wonderfully with the D100. The built-in flash is good out to 10-12 feet, too.

The only complaint I have (besides dealing with the 1.5x FOV issue) is the rubber connections cover. I would have preferred a hinged door with a latch. I was shooting outside at a car show in the heat and the rubber kept getting 'sticky.' It came loose a couple of times.

But thats it! Overall a very nice camera. I read in another thread where a poster compared battery costs between the D100, S2 and D1x. D100 is the hands down winner by far. S2 is the big time loser with expensive battery replacement costs.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is a DeFocus lens?

After 2,000 pictures....I am 100% ecstatic. I love this camera. It feels great in my hand. Focuses fast (24-85mm f/2.8 and 70-300mm G). No (basically) shutter lag. I love this camera. High ISO noise is low. Colors are amazing. With my new SB80dx, it is unbelievable. Truly ecstatic and don't think I could be happier with my decision.
