FastStone 3.7 came out a few days ago. Now supports Panasonic RW2 RAW format for the G1, and they've changed the file copying behaviour so you can choose whether it copies or moves. Previously it moved files even to a different disk, which fooled me a few times! You can now also edit EXIF timestamps by hours and minutes.

Still my favourite browser, and free, but so good it's worth contributing (no connection, just love it).

I have ver 3.6, can you update from within the program or do you just download the new version and install? Thanks

Just go to the Help menu, Home page, download and install. It overwrites the old version and keeps your prefs. All done in a few seconds as usual.

I keep earlier versions just in case, so I can de-install and revert if necessary. I have it on a laptop too, and copied the prefs file to save time on my customisation.

I'm still on v3.6. Anyhow, I just noticed from the 'help' menu there's "Enter Registration Code". I thought it was freeware. Am I wrong?

It's "donate ware". If you like it then donate $15 and then you get a registration code. All that does is stop the intermittent nagging for a donation.

FastStone is so good that I donated long time back.

I use it specifically for downloading from cards or reorganising hard drives and putting all files found into YYYY-MM-DD folders for easier finding later. Then I add simple descriptions to the dated folder name to make life easier.

It's a great full screen reviewer to evaluate the results and delete the shots of my foot etc. Many features included in it but I admit to using only maybe 10% of the program.

Regards............ Guy

Thank you! Downloaded, installed and loved it.

One of the good things I noticed is that the network browsing bug has been 'fixed' where it would cause the program to hang indefinitely if you didn't navigate exclusively through network neighborhood! At least on my setup.

Not that I think they fixed whatever was wrong, but now it won't let you even see the network drives unless you DO go through the network neighborhood :-)

Thanks, Bruce. I also highly recommend FastStone. Have 3.6 currently. Great product. Best index print program around as well, IMNSHO!

I wish these people had some other method of giving donations other than via CC. I would give the guy the $15 in an instant too!

I NEVER use my cards (or do banking ... ) over the Internet. I have had clients who have lost substantial amounts this way. If the amount is relatively small (under a couple of grand ... ) the bank will normally fix you up for it. With large limit cards, it becomes worth their while to fight about it ...

I intend to get a small limit card that is completely "free-floating", i.e. not attached to any bank account I have, for use for this sort of purpose, as well as making purchases over the Internet.

From a security point of view, I am just not prepared to do it any other way ...

thanks for the headsup--I'm a recent convert to FastStone from Irafanview, another small fast viewer, also very usable in my workflow. Really like that popup magnifier in FS.

Thanks for telling us! I love FastStone too, and donated. I'll now download the new one.
2 stupid questions:
  • Do you know whether it will convert RAW files from my FZ8 and/or E410?
  • Do many people edit JPEG's in FastStone, or prefer to switch to Picasa, or go off into PS Elements etc?
Sorry if this sounds daft, I have only done very primitive editing so far, and don't have a lot of spare time.

The main feature the current version of Faststone is missing is a slider for opening up the shadows in an image. For many people using a small sensor camera with limited dynamic range this is a very useful feature. Picasa 3 has it, as does, of course, Photoshop. It would be a powerful addition to Faststone which is otherwise one of my favorite programs.
