I liked the recently newly announced line up for Panasonic- pre-PMA announcemnts...
but...

I have been wanting the LX3 eve rsince it came out--

but the protruding lens from body plus the up to 60mm telephoto end only -- has kept me on the fence--

I like the 24mm + manual controls of course, plus hot shoe.....

I was hoping that the LX4 would have at least 5x (24-120mm) and maybe the lens is inside the body and not protrudes... :-(

Yes.... and I would like a sports car that gets 100 miles per gallon!

The superior optical performance of the LX3 is DUE to that "protruding lens" you dislike so much.

You seem to want a FS3 that makes the same high quality images as an LX3 will.
And that simply won't happen any time soon.

Unfortunately, you just can't have your cake and eat it too.

Right now, the choice is "small shirt pocket camera with a self closing lens shutter cap" or "slightly bigger higher quality real camera with a real lens cap."

Sorry, that's it.

Pick one and be happy with it.

John,

I am sure your dream LX4 is around the corner. It probably will have a 21-105mm f1.4 lens, have a larger sensor, but be smaller than the LX3. We will see Panasonic continue to improve its LX series. They might even include an OVF or EVF. I suggest that you wait and see.

For me, I could not wait so I got an LX3 and am very happy with it.

Yeah, I'd ike to see a pop-up EVF too but I aint holdin' my breath on it though...

You're probably gonna have to wait another 6months or so for the LX annual cycle, if they don't double it again like they did between the 2 & 3...

Might just as well settle for the new TZ7 because if 24-60mm @ F/2-2.8 don't cut it... What you propose waiting for in it will probably ruin that F/2 at the very least & then what will you have?... A TZ with control... So, why wait any longer than whenever the TZ7 hits the shelves....

I figure they'll ride this 24-60mm lens, as-is, for at least a cycle or two & merely piece-meal some FW upgrades & maybe fit it with a swivel screen during that/those cycle-runs... Aside from zoom & MF-resume & a T/S screen, I can;t even think of what else they could add to it, with the possible exception of upgrading the video & sound, the benefit of which would be lost on me...

Let's not forget 15 mega pixels ! Okay, I'm kidding. The LX3 is not for everybody but it seems like they can't keep up with the demand.

I'm going to agree with this. They still have a lot of desire for this model and aren't going to give up on it that quick. I think the next release might do 30fps video and be 12 MP, with of course a couple firmware upgrades. I highly doubt they'll do much with the lens for quite some time--they squeaked a lot out of that thing. In terms of size and sensor, I don't see much change on the way and really nothing to compete with. That's the biggest thing--this is a niche camera doing very well in a small (n=1) market.

If you're willing to sacrifice manual controls and hotshoe, then maybe the TZ6/TZ7 will work for you. It has a 25mm wideangle (at f/3.3).....which is close enough to 24mm AND it goes ALL the way to 300mm telephoto.

But if you want the manual controls plus hotshoe plus long telephoto, then you can always get a LX3 and G1 and 45-200 (35mm equivalence to 90-400mm) micro 4/3 lens.
