Please tell me I am wrong, but it seems that the Sony DSC-S70 has zero twain capabilities in Win 98 and Win 2000. Does anyone know otherwise?

The DSC-S70 does not use twain . But this is no great loss. Twain is a standardized downloading capability for scanners and digital cameras. Since the S-70 USB drivers simply treat it as another hard drive, there is no need for downloading. To view images in your favorite program (even your scanner software!), just open them in the normal way.

Why TWAIN? It's pain in the a$$ to use. S70 and most other new generation cameras work like a normal removeable disk tp your PC. It's faster and easier. You can not control the cameras action anyway.

If it treats it as a disk, does it mean you can upload pictures to the camera?
Can you store other types of files? Can you delete files just by pressing the
Delete key? I can't remember reading anything about this anywhere.

Planning to buy a DSC-S70 soon.

Lars, I dont have an S70, but I have the F505, and I'll assume the USB connections are the same. And yes, I confirm that you can delete, and copy to/from your pc to MS, just like ordinary files on your PC. Provided you name your images the same way as the S70 does (DSCxxxxx.jpg), and on the right "folder". I have a strong feeling that I gave the same answers to Ulysses a long time ago :).
Have fun!

Twain is not needed for image transfers. But, there are special use-cases where Twain is still needed.

Let's say I'm a biologist. I want to take series of photos of the growing plant from seed every hour for a week. I fixed the camera on the tripod, aiming at the plant. And I connect the AC power to the camera. With the Twain driver, I would be able to write my own program to take shots every hour and download the images to the disk automatically. Key requirements here are (1) unattended, automatic (2) no need to worry about memorystick overflow. This is quite different use-case than the normal camera use. I am just saying that there may be cases where Twain will be missed.

Like I said earlier, none of the camera out there allow this kind of control so TWAIN is useless here.

Just speculating...but I would not be surprised if some techno-smart type soon developed a program to control the camera through the USB port. The concept is broadly similar to using Twain...Know the protocol, know how to control the device! Here's hoping....

Yes, many moons ago, a kind soul named "Teddy" wrote the following reply to an unnamed individual who dreamed of playing back a slide show consisting of images and movies taken directly with the Cyber-shot camera as well as interspersed original images requiring the proper nomenclature and folder placement.

If you could access the images in the camera the same way a regular drive, then every hour you could move the file elsewhere. The only PB remaining is to take a photo every hour... I'm sure there is solutions for that
