DSLR--Decision Time!!!

Thanks for that great piece of advice--I hadn't really thought of it that way. I think what I'm really trying to do is find SOMETHING that will just make the decision for me! But your calculations and your insight really help.

Any more input is still greatly appreciated. I am now just stuck between S2 and D1X, I know the pros and cons for each, and every 10 minutes I change my mind again. Anyone who's had this same problem? What was it that finally made up your mind?

Thanks!

Hi Kate.

Have you read the updated S2 vs. D1x comparison by Mike Chaney?

I hope it helps.

I noticed in my own comparisons that the Shutter on the S2 seems very slow (even in comparison to D100) - so if responsive shooting is required I'd go with the D1x.

Kate,

When I purchased my D1x, the S2 was not available. I didn't like how the CCD on the S1 worked, it 'interpolated' to gain resolution. That's why I chose the D1x.. From what I've heard the S2 color interpretation isn't as good as the D1x. I couldn't be happier with my purchase of the D1x.

Hope this helps,

I still have not decided for 100% certain which DSLR I am going to buy so am probably not the best to give advice. One thing for certain the more you read the more confused you will become to a degree. Each person has their own preferences and dislikes ineach camera. What is a slow focus to some is fast to another, etc. it's very subjective unfortunately. I personally picture wise have not seen anything to truly set one camera far off from another in this race though in general I have seen more pictures from the D60 which pleases my eye but that may be post processing prowess more than anything.

I'd say consider first your true budget.. you already ahve the lens system so staying wiht a Nikon body is a given.

Second, determine what your real photographic needs are. if you plan to do a lot of wet shooting, extreme sports, fast action, then the D1X becomes an almost no brainer assuming item 1 also matches.

If none of the above applies then it becomes more of a D100 versus S2 issue and that is a personal taste item. Which seems to produce the pictures you like best, does either have features you truly need etc. Don't do a comparison between total features becomes that becomes a which has more thing versus which fits your needs best.

Lastly, if still not sure, close your eyes, say a prayer and flip a coin. In end it is like buying a new TV. When in the TV store we compare TVs to the point of total confusion as to which picture is the best. Once we buy one of the sets and get it home we are quickly amazed at how good the picture is and forget about the other sets. These cameras will be the same. Once you buy it, get used to it, learn how to use it and the needed psot processing skills, all will be well. The quality afforded by any of these cameras was $12000 3 years ago, and now the dream is within many of our's reaches. it's a serious investment but like computers we also know the price will drop and the quality wil improve over time. Just buy what you want, use it, love it and in a couple years consider an upgrade. I don't think you can go wrong no matter the choice. is why it is hard to decide :) No clear winner!

Hi
I was getting very visible patterned noise in the shadows at ISO
400 in conditions in the low 80's - what do you mean by "higher
temperatures"?
Higher than Phil's reference of about 21° celsius.

I did my test shots in conditions between roughly about 24°-29° celcius and could find shadow noise more or less in all shots, ISO 200 as well. It is extremey important to expose to the limits of the imager to keep noise down as well. Using auto programs and tweaking later does no good job to keep noise down...

The upper levels looked good to my eyes, it seems to be to have a look on the lover levels, the shadows only. Lots of other cameras do smooth something in the shadows too, possibly to get a better look. I think most P&S cameras do so and some D-SLR's as well, like D60 look the same...

I concluded to look for and testing some noise removal strategies before thinking about getting a new D100 (without defective pixels...). I think this noise is a reason why some feel prints of D100 look nice but not film like also the noise it is hard to be seen in print from ISO 200 shots.

Unless I find an easy to apply noise removal for a folder of images I am hesitating. Neat Image is a good program but appropriate settings take effort to find out I am unsure wether these settings can be applied to lots of images with good results too...

There are currently no experiences with Nikon Capture 3 noise removal and edge enhancement options as the program isn't available yet and it looks like there are some stability problems with all the nikon software at this time...

I've got a D100 already ... anyway this doesn't prevent me from getting my hands on a S2Pro, but this brochure of the camera makes me worry, it's clearly stated on the last page that the S2Pro will be "compatible with AF-S and AF-I nikkor except AF-S 17-35mm f/2.8D IF-ED and AF-S 28-70mm f/2.8D IF-ED". I'm almost all AF-S now and this would definitely be a major show stopper, has anybody tested with these two lenses with S2Pro? I'll have to wait a bit till these cameras show up at my dealer. Thanks.

Hi everyone, I've been hanging around the forums for a while now
absorbing all the great information and opinions everyone has to
offer. This seems to be a great site occupied by some great people!

I am venturing into my first DSLR purchase in the next couple of
weeks, and have been going back and forth for a few months on what
I should do!! I have Nikon lenses, so it comes down to the S2,
D1X, or D100... and I have firmly decided on each of them at least
three times already, only to change my mind and start all over. I
was planning to wait for the next "round" before getting anything,
but a new job requires one and thus a decision.

I've read all the posts in the Nikon and Fuji forums and after
weeding through all the problems and the quirks and the biases, lo
and behold I haven't really found that any of these cameras stands
firmly above the others. Does anyone have any advice for me that
could help me out? I will be using the camera mainly for shooting
travel and interiors, I will need the pictures to be sharp and have
low noise and true colors, and the body rugged enough to travel
everywhere with me, although I don't abuse my gear. The price
isn't too much of an issue since these are all within my
affordability.

Thanks to everyone in advance for your help--I desperately need
some advice here!!!

I think they are reffering to using these lenses on the AF-I Teleconverter.

The S2 works with all AFS lenses. Many people have been using them with no problems on the S2 Pro.

Hi Kate:-

I just sold my D30, to buy a D100 but it seems they quite makin them, it was a stupid move when I purchase the D30 cause the D100s were not out on the market and I couldn't wait. I have a F100 with Bat pack and an F5 with lens, so I'm going with the D1X. I shoot weddings, sunsets, and do close-up work, and whatever gets in the way, so what if they come out with a D2X???, D1X is a solid medal case camera, identical to an F100 with a battery pack or a F5 the amount of pixels on the D1X is plenty for 11x14s or bigger, most people don't buy anything bigger then 11x14 anyway, mostly 5x7 & 8x10s.

good luck in your decision

Im Confused - Does the S2 Pro Work with the AF-S 17-35mm f/2.8D IF-ED Lens ?

Kate,

For the money, I think you made a very wise choice. Enjoy it! (I'm waiting on an S2 myself to go with the D1x I already have).

Hi

Can you please list some of your most important reasons to choose this way?

I am possibly in a similar decision phase as you are. I like the D100 body very much (maybe better than the S2 in some aspects) and some of it's functionallity too, but I am struggeling with some image quality issues I found with D100...

I chose the S2 for a lot of reasons. Image quality first and foremost, I know there are many different opinions out there, but I liked the images from the S2 the best. I like its controls and flexibility, the low noise across ISO ranges, the incredible job it does at long and night exposures... I love that it has the PC sync port built in--I use studio strobes a lot and I really don't like that the D100 doesn't include this port. I love how the body feels and fits in my hands, I actually like the battery setup because I travel a lot and if I had a proprietary battery fluke out on me for some reason, I would be S.O.L., with the S2 I just go to any store and pick up a pack of AA's. I think that whatever camera you choose, you will probably be very happy, but those are the reasons I chose what I did, and I have absolutely no regrets at all. I LOVE my S2!!!!

Kate

I went for the same reasons as you. I've been thinking on my old E-10 and how I used that one. I shot 100% JPG and I think I will do the same with the S2. The S2 has proven to give the best JPG out of camera so it's my clear choice... The only problem here in Sweden seems to be the waiting list to get one...

Good luck !
Cheers
Jens

Hi!

Thank you for the many statements... You stated one important thing in my eyes... image quality...

I had a 1 week touch with D100 and my feel was that images look not as clean as I had expected it from a D-SLR... I felt there is always some noise even at ISO 200 most visible in shadows and the need to always tweek around. I dislike to always run enhancement actions or other stuff for basic image quality either (if this is possible at all...)

On the other hand colour reminds me somehow on Kodachrome, don't know why... but maybe it doesn't matter as well, colours can be changed easy with digital can't they (;
