Well, as a mea culpa to those who complain that 2 lenses are not enough, let's do a $5000 lens budget, to acommodate all situations for the rest of your professional life, using B&H Imported Pricing, and original Nikon equipment when possible.

I compiled a list of lenses and related items, and price, feel free to cut and paste.

James

P.s. This is a biggie, will take even me a while to decide.

8/4 Sigma Fisheye AFD - $450
14/2.8 AFD ED - $1220
17-35/2.8 AFS EDIF - $1280
18-35/3.5-4.5 AFD EDIF - $400
20/2.8 AFD - $390
24/2.8 AFD - $270

28/2.8 AFD - $180
28/3.5 AIS PC - $850
28-70/2.8 AFD EDIF - $1330
28-105/3.5-4.5 AFD IF - $290
35/2 AFD - $230
35-70/2.8 AFD - $530

50/1.4 AFD - $270
50/1.8 AFD - $100
60/2.8 AFD Micro - $310
70-180/4.5-5.6 ED Micro - $630
70-300/4-5.6 AFG - $100

180/2.8 AFD EDIF - $590
200/4 AFD EDIF - $1080
300/2.8 AFS-II EDIF - $3500
300/4 AFS EDIF - $880
TC-14E II - $320
TC-20E II - $320
Kenko Extension Tube Set AFD (12, 20, 36mm) - $150

On a $5K budget based on your prices, to cover all situations, here is what I'd select:

17-35 AFS $1280
60 Micro $310
85/1.4D $800
135/2DC $830
180/2.8D $590
300/4 AFS $880
TC-14e $320

Darn. I went $10 over...

I'd bet a fair number of folks would rather work with the 17-35, 28-70 and 80-200 AFS zooms along with the 300/4 AFS at $150 over budget though. There is convenience gained at the expense of weight and loss of some quality, as well as flare issues, etc., but I do understand that some folks would rather carry and shoot a couple of lenses to cover the range, and they'd try to ignore the weight.

Generally, shooting mostly primes, I carry three lenses to cover what I foresee my needs will be on a shoot and find that I rarely have problems. For instance, the 17-35, 85 and 135 together cover one heck of a lot of situations except for the long work or macro, and the 60, 135 and 300 makes an excellent field kit. The 85, 180 and 300 make a great telephoto kit too.

I'm sure you get the idea.

Ron hit it (almost) spot on for me ...

I'm in the

17-35
28-70
80-200
300 f/4

camp

Though I would add an 85 1.4 and a TC-14e (which makes me about, what, $1400 over budget? - but I can live with that! :)

Right now I shoot with:

24mm 2.8 AF (not nearly wide as I like it on the D1x)

50mm 1.8 AF (hardly comes out of the bag anymore ... the crop factor makes it less useful ...)
85mm 1.8 AF
80-200 2.8 AFS

I called Roberts to add the 17-35 or the 28-70 last week, but they don't have either one of them!

I love my 85mm 1.8, but I do a lot of sports and weddings, and I need the flexibility of the zooms in those situations (granted, I had been doing a good job of "making do" without them, but ... I want to make my job easier!

Glad to know I only have to come up with about $5k to get all of my glass though! :)

Micheal

P.S. - For my own personal fun, I would also add the 60mm Micro and the 85mm 2.8 PC Micro ... and I would love a 135 AF DC ... shoot the numbers are sky rocketing again!

Well, if I was a sports guy, serious sport guy, I would pick the following:

28/2.8 AFD - $180
80-200/2.8 AFS EDIF - $1270
300/2.8 AFS-II EDIF - $3500

The 28 is for group photos, when the game is over. Of course if there is a few dollars more, I rather it be 28-105, or 24-85, or 20, or even a 24.

24-85/3.5-4.5 AFS G IF - $399
80-200/2.8 AFS EDIF - $1270
TC-14E II - $320

Subtotal = $4489

50/1.8 AFD - $100
85/1.8 AFD - $310 (would rather have 105/2.8 AFD Micro - $510)

Total = $ 4899

The weakest lens in this line up as far as quality would be the 25-85 AFS-G (new lens - was not in your list), but the 50/1.8 AFD would pick up the slack in this focal range for both speed and image quality. I could have gone with the 28-70/2.8 AFD EDIF - $1330 instead, but then I would have been nearly out of money with only 3 lenses.

The TC-14E II is important to me as I would need it for the sports photography that I often do. The 85/1.8 AFD is just something I through in there to use up some of the $411 that was left. In reality I would probably get the 105/2.8 AFD Micro - $510 instead of the 85/1.8. It would add micro/macro which would complete the line up for what I do, but it would also put me $100 over budget.

I just noticed that the 14mm is a Nikon. I know you said to use Nikon glass, but in this case I would use the Sigma instead. It's $400 cheaper for a lens I would not use much and the quality of the Sigma 14mm is fairly good.

I guess I can afford to swap the 85/1.8 for the 105/2.8 Micro after all. And probably a 2x teleconverter as well!

Oh, man, this is the most fun I've had since we registered for the wedding...

For what I do, with $5k I could get both the zooms AND the primes I want, and then figure out what to take with me for any given shoot:

17-35/2.8 AFS EDIF - $1280
28-70/2.8 AFD EDIF - $1330
80-200/2.8 non AFS - $750 at B&H

20/2.8 AFD - $390
24/2.8 AFD - $270
50/1.8 AFD - $100
85/1.8 AFD - $310
180/2.8 AFD EDIF - $590

Shoot, $20 over. Well, I'll happily spend $20 of my own money for THIS collection.

What's the budget for filters? :-)

Where did you come up w/ these lens prices. I haven't seen anywhere where I can buy any of these lenses at these prices. I just bought the 80-200 2.8 AFS and the 105 Micro 2.8 from wolf/Ritz and I paid way more than that. I am still within my 7 day full return period. I paid $1529.00 for the 80-200 and $781.05 for the 105 Micro. Someone please tell me where to find these cheaper so I can return these, save some money and possibly buy another lens with the savings.

This is a pretty fine line up. A question for Ron, could you use the TC-14e with the 135/2DC to cover the 180/2.8D?

Kevin R.
On a $5K budget based on your prices, to cover all situations, here
is what I'd select:

17-35 AFS $1280
60 Micro $310
85/1.4D $800
135/2DC $830
180/2.8D $590
300/4 AFS $880
TC-14e $320

Darn. I went $10 over...

I'd bet a fair number of folks would rather work with the 17-35,
28-70 and 80-200 AFS zooms along with the 300/4 AFS at $150 over
budget though. There is convenience gained at the expense of weight
and loss of some quality, as well as flare issues, etc., but I do
understand that some folks would rather carry and shoot a couple of
lenses to cover the range, and they'd try to ignore the weight.

Generally, shooting mostly primes, I carry three lenses to cover
what I foresee my needs will be on a shoot and find that I rarely

I think he quoted prices from B&H photo ( http://www.bhphotovideo.com ). You will also find a few other good retailers. ( http://www.canogacamera.com ) & ( http://www.robertsimaging.com ) are also worth looking into (There are some others too). However, I don't deal with Ritz, Wolfe, Camera World and most locations in Brooklyn NY anymore.

These are B&H Photo prices, for Imported (not US warrantied) lenses. I didn't compare all of the prices Zoe posted here with the B&H site, but he's to the penny (give or take a cent) on the lenses I care about...

way more than that. I am still within my 7 day full return period.
I paid $1529.00 for the 80-200 and $781.05 for the 105 Micro.
Someone please tell me where to find these cheaper so I can return
these, save some money and possibly buy another lens with the
savings.

Thanks

Marshall,

These are B&H imported pricing, rounded up to the next $10. I have friends whose "imported" B&H lens went bad, but B&H replaced it quickly (within the one-year warranty), so IMHO it is pretty safe to go this route. Personally, that is the only thing I do (and buying from Adorama also).

James

P.s. I have been an unrepentant critique of B&H in certain small area of their business which affects me but not most people, hence nobody can accuse me of being a B&H homer trying to promote their business. In fact Mr Posner and myself still have an outstanding public disagreement...
Thanks
Oh, man, this is the most fun I've had since we registered for the
wedding...

For what I do, with $5k I could get both the zooms AND the primes I
want, and then figure out what to take with me for any given shoot:

17-35/2.8 AFS EDIF - $1280
28-70/2.8 AFD EDIF - $1330
80-200/2.8 non AFS - $750 at B&H

20/2.8 AFD - $390
24/2.8 AFD - $270
50/1.8 AFD - $100
85/1.8 AFD - $310
180/2.8 AFD EDIF - $590

Shoot, $20 over. Well, I'll happily spend $20 of my own money for
THIS collection.

What's the budget for filters? :-)

I am not Ron, but is a pro and teaches photography also. Drive me nuts that people are wanting to put a 2x on 85/1.4 or 20/2.8, etc, quit it already.

You get Nikkor and expensive items like 135/2 DC because you want the best picture, why would you go mess it up by adding more lens surfaces?

It is like taking Sandra Bullock to the Oscars... in a 10-year-old JUNKER!

The top lenses are mostly designed to work by themselves, to obtain the best results. Only in limited cases would you use a converter, like a 500/4 AFS-II, or 300/2.8.

In photography, one plus one does not equal two, it equals near-zero!

Sorry to blow off steam on you. I was going to take it out by talking about that village idiot in the big house, but his thugs maybe watching...

James
This is a pretty fine line up. A question for Ron, could you use
the TC-14e with the 135/2DC to cover the 180/2.8D?

Kevin R.

Kevin, you'd have to modify the mounting plate on the TC -- it has an indexing key that makes it mount only to the AFS lenses unless that is filed down. I haven't done that, so I haven't tested the TC on the 135/2.

Ron

Generally, shooting mostly primes, I carry three lenses to cover
what I foresee my needs will be on a shoot and find that I rarely
have problems. For instance, the 17-35, 85 and 135 together cover
one heck of a lot of situations except for the long work or macro,
and the 60, 135 and 300 makes an excellent field kit. The 85, 180
and 300 make a great telephoto kit too.

I'm sure you get the idea.

For the rest of my life? I would not use imported lens... I will want easy repair.

I would get the following:
Nikon 17-35mm f/2.8 AFS-ED $1440
Nikon 28-70mm f/2.8 AFS-ED $1500
Nikon 80-400 f/4.5-5.6 VR-ED $1400

That brings you to $4340.

Then add some high quality B+W multicoat filters.
3 x B+W UV Haze 10 (MRC) $112 each (so $336)
1 x B+W Circular Polarizer (MRC) $150

You still have money to spare.

Phil
Well, as a mea culpa to those who complain that 2 lenses are not
enough, let's do a $5000 lens budget, to acommodate all situations
for the rest of your professional life, using B&H Imported Pricing,
and original Nikon equipment when possible.

I compiled a list of lenses and related items, and price, feel free
to cut and paste.
