can't focus white wall....

the focus didn't lock on that wall, I had to take that photo with manual focus

Hi,

I can't get to auto focus this white wall ...ist that normal?
Read the manual about Custom White Balance and you'll know why it won't focus on white wall or subject with absolutely no contrast when manual focus should be used. Same analogy shooting into the blue sky with no clouds to check for sensor dirt.

Manual, page 84: "When Autofocus Fails".

the autofocus is not supersmart, it can only focus if there is any detail visible on that wall. High contrast areas, edges, corners from white to black or such are ideal to focus. you can go and focus on such an edge, then hold the shutter half way down and recompose the image... meaning you move the camera to the area you intend to take a photo of.

should work fine.

You can of course use manual focusing, but it takes longer and in many cases is less accurate if you do the re-framing properly!

This is the type of question that should be in the Beginners Questions forum! We now have people that have never owned an SLR buying the $2700 5D2 because they can "afford" it. There's a good chance a P&S camera won't probably focus on a white wall. And WHY would you want to focus on a white wall?? You got a wall fetish? :D

No wonder this forum is clogged with newbie questions! ugh.

it would be perfect. It should be reposted then.

I coulda had a V8 -- but I bought a 1D Mark III instead

When I ask which Canon lenses are best,
people tell me to 'go to L.'

Waiter, hold the 1Ds Mark III; I'll have a 5D Mark II instead

hehe ...this is my first white wall ... I allways want to take a photo to the white house but as I can't go there I thought to take a photo to my white wall ... :)

yes I'm newbie and I have a 5d mkii, that I will pay with my work and maybe some white walls photos to ... :)

thanks to who really help me

Even Lastolite puts a contrasting white cross-hair on their folding white balance grey disc to give you something to focus on.

Painting it black won't help unless its a dot and then look out. The dreaded black dot!

Try focusing on the edge and then move over, better yet find a beautiful model (you can always clone her out later) to focus on. If you want to share your results, leave the model in temporarily. Always manually focus. Seriously, Happy shooting.

meant always can manually focus, not suggesting to do it...... oops

In worse case you can mount a speedlight (430ex or 580ex) onto your camera.. It will project a grid onto the wall so your camera can focus on it ;)

Anybody want to invent a digital back for my T90?

Actually, if the wall were perfectly flat white, and you filled the frame with it, you couldn't manually focus on it either. Of course it wouldn't matter because you'd get the same picture in or out of focus.
