Which settings will give me the best quality for my pictures with my S404?

Image Size: 2272 x 1704
Quality: Standard

Image Size: 1600 x 1200
Quality: Fine

The first settings above gives me a smaller file size. Am I losing any quality with this setting?

I display all of my pictures on my PC with a photo screen saver.
90% of my pictures will be printed on 4 x 6 paper.

Thanks in advance for your help and comments!

Standard? Best setting is fine. What size is your memory card? The largest card like 64mb or 128mb would work better. Standard use more compress = poor quality print.
Image Size: 1600 x 1200
Quality: Fine
This 1600 X 1200 is 2.1mp size. Not bad for 4 X 6 print.
2272 X 1704 is best choice for 8 X 10 print.

My problem is the size of the files. I am using a 56k dialup to upload my pictures to WalMart for processing.

This setting is too large for me to upload.
Image Size: 2272 x 1704

This setting is what I have been using.
Image Size: 1600 x 1200

Sound like the above setting is my best bet for quality. Is this true?

Thanks!

Oh boy! Yeah, slow modem is a big headache to upload. Perhaps you should visit Wal-Mart website for best tips. This should tell you what you need to do for processing. Sometimes, processing center does have rip program to get best quality from smallest file like 500 - 700k file. Tom

That would be too easy Jon! I have created a web page that has links to my photo albums @ WalMart.com. This allows my family and friends to select and order the pictures they want printed. I am trying to make it as easy as possible for my relatives to see and print my digital pictures. WalMarts online price of .26 cents per 4x6 with no tax and shipping charges is too good a deal. Thanks!

that is really cool! good deal too. i also have a 56K, and can only imagine how long it would take to upload more than a couple pictures.

if il put two photos that are 2 and 4 mp infront of you youll have a hard time telling eich oine is wich, youll have alot easyer job to see the difference between standard and fine.

so 1600 x 1200 is enough for any photo that will not be printed any bigger then 4" x 6".

But youll really enjoy your camera more by getting a 128 megs memory card, they arent THAT expensive.

but imho pizels are worth less then compression.

i personally shoot everyday shots with 1600 x 1200, but ive done more and more 2272 x 1704 lately, since you never know when the photo of you life comes infront of you, and its really sad to waste something like that on the few bucks yo usave on extra memory.

For the best results you should:

1) Take the pictures at the highest resolution (pixels) and the highest Quality. Transfer them to your computer in this format. i.e. 2272 X 1704, Quality Fine This way, for your best pictures, you have the option of large reprints at good quality. Of course, this assumes that you have a suitable size memory card (128 MB or 256 MB).

2) When you upload them to Walmart, reduce the file size by changing the "image size" (# of pixels) with the minimum compression (affect on quality). i.e. 1600 X 1200 Quality Fine This is perfectly acceptable for the 4X6 prints for your relatives to order from Walmart. This can be done using ACDC or other image editing programs.

Interesting. Is 800 x 600 too small for high quality 4x6 prints if the quality setting was originally at "Fine" and the compression was kept to a minimum? I would only do this when I uploaded my pics to WalMart.

Thanks!

I have one 128 meg card. As an example, I filled the card up when I took a three day vacation to Snowshoe mountain last month. Using the 1600x1200 "fine" settings, I can get 117 pictures on one card. As the weekend progressed, I was constantly deleting the pictures that did not look good on the cameras little monitor (missed shot, out of focus, etc). That is the great thing about a digital camera, I can take as many pictures as I want to ensure I capture the moment.

If anybody is interested in how I am using MSN Photo and WalMart web pages for my photo needs, check out my web page. http://the.hudsons.tripod.com/ Please be kind for I am a true amature when it comes to photography.

Please remember, my goal is to make the process as easy as possible for my relatives to download and purchase prints of my digital photos while I am also trying to make the process as easy as possible for myself to upload the photos.

Thanks!
