Since our Fuji cameras are not compatible with Epson’s PRINT Image Matching technology, can someone give me a step by step on how to set up Photoshop 6 for optimal printing on my Epson 780 printer? What I am really looking for is to consistently have my prints match what is on my monitor. What are the “correct” settings to use in Photoshop for color space, ICM profiles, etc? Also, what settings in the Epson setup? For the sake of this discussion, assume I am using Epson Premium Glossy Photo paper. Thanks.

My Setup:

Monitor: Sony HMD A200
Printer: Epson 780
Camera: S602
Photoshop 6.01
PC/OS: Windows 2000

Hi Dodge

I'm sure people will disagree with me but I've never found the printing side of Photoshop to work all that well. There print manager isn't up to much either frankly.
If you're serious about printing there is just one answer: Qimage.
Trial download from here, $35 to buy
http://www.ddisoftware.com/qimage/

It does so many things for printing so well, that I can't enumerate them here. I had a few problems setting it up until I found the right profile, and now I wouldn't dream of printing on anything else.

Make sure you read the 'learn by example', and make sure you don't have a default profile in your printer and then select another one in Qimage because that doesn't work well.

Good luck

Dodge,

I have an Epson Stylus Photo 820 and use PSP 7.0. I get great results that match colors on my monitor exactly with these Epson printer settings:

Use Custom Setup.
Color Management
Gamma 1.8
Use color controls
Epson Natural color
Mode- Automatic
Brightnes +5
Contrast +5
Saturation 0
Cyan 0
Magenta -5
Yellow -7

Paper is Epson Premium Glossy Photo - 2880 dpi. for the best result.
Gets good results on Archival Matte on 1440 dpi.

Let me know if this works for you.

Thanks, I will try these settings. But in PSP 7, do you use color managment? PSP has only limited Color managment. It allows you to choose monitor & printer ICM profiles only. This may be all you need, but Photoshop 6 has several other selections I am trying to find out the usage of.

I do not use color management. I've never tried it. I have the monitor gamma settings set at 1.0 which seems pleasing to me and accurate.

Hi JAJ

I suggest you put this in the printing forum. Someone with the exact printer will tell you what their settings are and save you a lot of experimentation.

The trick is to find an sRGB which suits the camera and a profile that suits the printer. The closer the match, the better the prints.

You do say however that your monitor is set to a gamma of 1 and it looks fine. This is very bright compared to the average as Windows defaults to 2.2 and a Mac to 1.8. It could just be that your prints look very dark because of that?

Double ditto!!
You've got a great setup. For $35, why not make it closer to perfect?
