The shots look good although the link didn't work for me.
I was at the beach today for lunch with your old lens (18-200) and grabbed a few shots as well. We are VERY lucky to have 82 degree weather while most of the nation freezes.
Fix that link, I wanna see the rest.
Thanks for posting,
Joe

If this still fails, just go to the "Action" section on my Website and follow the internal link there. Top set of the "Action" page displays my favorites from today; the "full coverage" link displays 76 out of 702 shots I took today.

Yeah, I fat-fingered '08' instead of '09' in the link. Glad you got there by other means... My second favorite surfer was this guy. He had this cool-Zen quality to him... and if you squint real hard, he almost looks like Morris.
BTW, if you're in the neighborhood, this competition continues tomorrow, and I think I'm going to be there at sunrise, as I did today. It'd be nice to meet you if you can make it. I'll be the geeky guy with the hunter green Lowepro backpack and two Nikon cameras strapped around his neck.

I can't make it tomorrow but hopefully one day we can hook up. I had a late lunch in Manhattan Beach today and took a few shots from the pier myself. None as nice as yours, I was "against the light" since they were only allowing surfing on the south side of the pier. It did make for some cool light through the backs of the waves though, like this....
Take care, I like the gallery,

That's a cool effect. Surprisingly, a professional photographer I met today (works for the OC Register) was doing the same thing. I chose to stay on the pier, shooting south-west, while he went down on the beach and shot pretty crossed against the sun. He explained he simply opened up 2 stops (he had extremely fast glass, BTW), and over-exposed the background to get the surfers properly exposed. He showed me the shots -- not bad. Might have to try that sometime.
Speaking of fast glass, here he is shielding himself from the sun with his D3 (also had a D700 as his backup).
BTW, he gave me a tutorial on 3D dynamic focusing with my D90 -- very cool feature which I intend to use tomorrow.

Nice one too! Like the silhouette and water streaming from the hand-
P.S.- It is warmer here in Indy now, all the way up to freezing today!

I'd be very interested to hear more. I tried it a bit today (3-D tracking - 11 points) and seemed to have trouble keeping the surfers under the active point.
Perhaps his tips would help me.
Thanks,
Joe

Were you using the center point? That was the tip this guy gave me, and it seemed to work well. When the subject got away from the center point, one of the other focus points picked it up. I was using Center point with wide setting (bigger than normal).
I'll experiment tomorrow and I'll report here... I've never had much luck with AF-C, and this seems to be an enhanced AF-C mode. When this photographer and I spoke, he pointed out it works much better with 51 focus points -- of course, with that level of granularity, the focus gets picked up by the next point quicker as there's less of a gap.

I had the camera set to AF-C & 3D Dynamic (11 point). I would try and pick up focus lock on the center point and then as the subject moved it should have tracked them to the next point but I found that most times the next focus point it selected was not where my subject had gone in the frame. It was my first time trying it so I may well have been doing something wrong or perhaps the situation wasn't well suited.
Anyway, very interested to hear your results.

My favourites are the third last and second last ones, where you can see how well the lady is in control of her balance on the surfboard and also how well she is concentrating. Also i like how nice the water is curved after het surfboard in these pictures.
You did a fin job following the eNo curves though my favorite is the last. It is very well composed with the diagonal of the wave leading to the surfer who is clearly struggling with the breaking wave.
Thanks, Morris. What a fun day. The best part (not so apparent in these pictures because it was around 9am by then) was the light. It was truly wonderful. Check out photos taken earlier in the day, like these two that reminded me of you a little bit.
I'm going to go out there again today (just dragged myself out of bed) and see if its as good as it was yesterday.

Great stuff eNo. The 300mm length really helps out ey?
Which pier are these taken from? I can't place it in my mind.
