I went to the Asian Game Show in Hong Kong last month with my new 5D II and Sony held their Playstation girls beauty pageant. I thought it was a good test for the 5D II + 70-200mm f/2.8L IS with 580EX flash. Some people seemed to have problem with the IQ of the 70-200mm f2.8L IS on the 5D II and others seemed to have problem with flash exposure. Luckily, i didn't seemed to have encountered these problems.

A lot of skin is blown out and obviously some WB are so-so depending on the amount and the color of the available light Vs your amber dome colored flash.

Minus 0.5 Ev on the RAW files and a little WB tweakening could solve the problem...

I have the 70-200 IS and it shines on the 5D2

Hi Ludo,

Thanks for the suggestion. WB is always a huge problem at these events. The hall it self was mainly illuminated by energy saving florescent type light blubs, then there were the makeshift stage lights and then the flash light. There were basically 3 different light source with 3 different color temperature, so it's almost impossible to get a truly pleasing WB in that hall. I was mainly hoping to demonstrate the resolution of the camera + lens combo with those photos, not really pleasing WB.

I I also use GFong products and try and get the most out of the ambient light to hide as much as possible my flash influence. Tough...

My point was not to focus on the WB, but blown or semi-blown parts doesn't help when you try to appreciate a shot.

Good shots nevertheless

Very nice pictures. But the winner (the one in the last picture) looks like having fake teeth.

different ideas of beauty. Women of color here in the states sometimes do the same thing, I dont think much of it, but others seem to.

By the same token seeing pics of cosplayers and gothic dressup girls makes me want to move to japan

Different strokes, different folks, as always.

Different cultures of course. Orientals naturally have have deep brown color eyes and black hair and somehow find caucasian features like blue/green eyes, brown/blond hair appealing. That's why you would see lots of oriental people dying their hair brown or even blond and it's very popular amongst young girls to wear these colored contact lenses.

Cosplay is a culture originated from Japan. here's an eplanation from wikipedia:-

Cosplay (コスプレ, kosupure?), short for "costume play",[1] is a type of performance art whose participants outfit themselves, with often-elaborate costumes and accessories, as a specific character. Characters are usually sourced in various Japanese and East Asian media, including manga, anime, tokusatsu, comic books, graphic novels, video games, and fantasy movies. Other sources include performers from J-pop, J-rock, Visual Kei, fantasy music stories (such as stories by the band Sound Horizon), novels, and objects from cyberspace or the real world that are unique and dramatic (especially if they have or can be given an anthropomorphic form).

True, but also just to differentiate as most of the population has black/dark brown hair and similar coloured eyes.
