I'm looking for the best Powershot to stick in my bag along with my 30D and lenses, flashes, etc. purely for video purposes. I don't want to lug around a camcorder but sometimes want some decent video clips. Also might get used indoors for longer clips.

I have a G6 which, of course, is no good for video beyond 3 minutes. I also have an S1IS but that seems a bit bulky for what I need. Also, I don't need that long a lens.

I had an SD200 which probably would have worked but I sold it.

I want quality but not gigantic file sizes.

Suggestions?

Evidently not a topic of interest. But for the record, I decided on an A630.

Actually, it was a day and a half between my posts. Which, I see you realized.

But thanks for the agreement. I like the G6 but with CHDK the A630 should be very similar, with the same sensor size and all. And not having videos limited to 3 minutes is kind of crucial.
you gotta give some time for people to respond...not after 41 minutes
hahahha

but anyway i think the A630 is a good choice..

ooopss... i did not realize your orig thread was 2 days old...

The A630 is a good recommendation, but since I shot image stabilized video with my A650 I never went back A620 videoing w/o IS. It makes a great big difference and I consider myself steady handed. Look for even the cheapest one, but with IS.

It would be even better to have optical zoom ability during video capture, but most cameras only provide digital zoom during videoing.

SD880 has new video format which takes 30% less file space than before.
You can shoot 45 minutes or 4 GB at one time. Only does digital zoom though.
You need the ZoomBrowser software to see the video on this camera.

I've been comparing AVI sizes between a Canon SD850 and Casio Z750 for videos of same length at same resolution and the difference is huge (9 sec at 320x240 is 454K vs 6 meg for the Canon). From what you say different cameras are hard wired for different compression with no apparent adjustment available as with stills. Right? Any idea where to get more info on this?

Sony just released a new $199 mini HD video camera aimed at YouTubers. Its only 1 3/4 x 2 1/2 x 4 1/4 and shoots 1080/30p. The PM1 Webbie HD version will also be coming out which is even smaller (same size as a SD series!).
