NYC: Cathedral Church of St. John The Divine

Nice work Dez. I share Alastairs fascination for these buildings which are not really that easy to capture well. You have got the internal lighting and stained glass windows well balanced and you seem to have captured the architectural intent effectively.

Getting those ceiling shots is very hard on the neck (at my age).

As regards lighting, is there something going on with coloured lights on some of the columns? It seems a little too pronounced to be projections from sunlight through the stained glass windows.

Thank you Neville. The blending of exposures helped in getting detail both in the bright and dark areas.

As for the colors on the walls and/or columns, those were illuminated from the stained glass. You are correct but I guess with HDR, it is more pronounced. I rather like it :D

Hey DS - nice to see ya shootin' in my neck of the woods. Shoulda told me, we could have worked the place together and said a few prayers (and by today's headlines this planet needs all the help it can get - earthly & divine).

Love the shots, especially that last one. Wickedly effective angles and beautiful color.

Once again beautiful work, I've been to St. John's many times and you have really captured its beauty. Regarding the FDNY Memorial, this is a memorial to the 23rd Street fire in 1966, that took the lives of 12 FDNY firefighters. It was the largest loss of life fire to FDNY members until 9-11-01. The memorial was constructed from the debris of Wonder Drug Store where the fire occurred. Their is also a plaque on the wall of the building that stands on the site at 6 East 23rd Street.

Dez correctly quoted the "claim", which your Wiki article confirms. Remember, however, that Wiki articles can be written by anyone and though usually very informative, hardly qualify as a source you would want to bet your life on:

The three larger structures are Basilicas; St. John's is a Cathedral, the largest in the world.

Great pics. You should hear the organ!

Cheers,
Jeff

Thanks Jeff. I did hear the organ. The choir was practicing while I visited. They were great!

Also, thanks for your tidbit of information :D

I hate it when over done, but your HDR treatment is right on, I mean, you can't tell and that is the way it should be.

Absolutely very nice shots. Phil should pass on some of those CLICK revenues to you, your work keeps the traffic active to this site. Very nice.

Very nice.
I'll take some 'click revenue' :P

Thanks Alan. I use HDR only when I have to & that's usually during heavy contrasty scenes or where's too much shadows.

I've use Active D-Lighting sparingly in the past and I hate it. I don't like the washed-out look that it gives me. HDR works for me.
