Looked at several reviews and check out some forums but it hasn't been of much help! Perhaps you peeps could give some advise?

Not sure how these cameras are packaged in the Netherlands, but sure you include a charger and a spare set of batteries in your purchase. They are all 4MP, so you will probably want at least a 128M memory card. This will give you 60 - 70 pics at full resolution.

All the cameras you listed are capable of excellent pictures. The S404 has a 4x zoom and is faster at full zoom than the other two. I think all the lenses are pretty sharp, the S404 also has very low distortion at full zoom or wide angle. I think the S404 is the biggest of the three, altough it will still fit in my jacket pocket.

Good luck!
Richard.

THNX for your reply but you are not really a impartial person!:P I would also like to know what other peeps think about the choice I gave them:D

So any peeps with experience with a Minolta F100 or a Canon S40???

Hey!! what do you mean not impartial? ;-)

Seriously though, at the time I bought the S404 I did look at the Canon S40, but it was out of my price range at that point in time. If price had not been an issue, the only two things that I didn't like about the S40 were the zoom and the propietary battery.

I think the zoom on the S40 maxes out at 118mm (35mm equivalent), the S404 goes to 140mm. I had gotten used to the 135mm on my old Olympus SLR. I just don't like propietary batteries. They are expensive and difficult to replace when the vendor gets bored with the model.

Aside from those issues, I think the S40 is a great camara with excellent optics. (I still have a Canon A50 and a Canon S2710 negative scanner and like quality of canon products very much.)

I don't have any real opinion on the F100. I did read a review of it on Digital Imaging Resource. If you haven't seen the reivew, it might be worth a look. http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/F100/F100A.HTM

I had an S40 (which got stolen) and am now replacing it. Am thinking of going for the F100 because slightly smaller (inportant when stuffing into pocket) and also I did worry about the Lens cover/on switch on S40 which I felt was a little flimsy. Otherwise S40 was great - but Minota makes good cameras and I don't really see any downside of the F100. Howver I have also agonised for days on this too!

Canon s40
Protected lens. By some considered having the best picture quality of the three.
Minolta Dimage S404
Best optics. Threads on lens allowing direct 35.5 mm filter addons. By some considered to have the best picture quality of the three.
Minolta Dimage F100
Smallest. Inferior media. By some considered to have the best picture quality of the three.
Looked at several reviews and check out some forums but it hasn't
been of much help! Perhaps you peeps could give some advise?
If you don't know what you want, how can you know how to get it? In other words; what are your requierements? Intended use? Other contraints?

Well, the things I want to do with the camera is the following:

-making fun pictures where ever when ever

-I 'll want to use it on a more proffesional(sounds nice :P) level, cause I want to study photography as an extra subject during my final year in Universaty.

That's about what I want to do.

Want some second opinion on S404? Go to my galleries:

Oh, yeah. Majority of the pictures coming out of my S404 are just like that.

Don't know why. I am not the only person who has this kind of auto focus problem with S404. Read steve's digital camera review for the section that also mentions this.

How about the thread and converter lens for the Minolta S404?

The camera lens does have threads. However according to Minolta, they have no compatible converter lens available for the minolta S404 and they have no plan to manufature any for this particular camera. And they will not support it if you are going to look for your own solution. Don't ask me why.

Did you talk to Minolta about replacement/repair? The S404 I used was easy to get correct focus on, easier than my D7i even, since it's not as prone to search far and wide for AF.

What is a "converter lens"?

I think all three are excellent but I am hankering over the F100. Why?

1. Because it has more features and manual controls than either of the other two - if you want to get technical - including flex focus. It loses almost nothing in features over a D7i apart from the lens.

2. It has an incredible intelligent scene mode that actually works - for grabbing an informal shot if you want to shoot from the hip

3. Because 256 and 512Mb SD cards have been announced (this was the biggest drawback)

4. Because its the most compact and I can take it anywhere and find replacement batteries in any store.

It got a rave review in What Digital Camera in the UK.

The fact that's its the coolest looking camera on the planet has nothing to do with it, of course.

I thought SD cards were inferiour to CF cards?

Hey smoking bear, sorry most of your pictures are comming out blurry. You posted this set of pics some while ago, did you ever follow up on any of the feedback you received? Did you ever get the camera checked?

The focus on the S404 is fine. I took 127 pics on a recent camping trip, with 3 focus misses. I have 70+ pictures from that trip posted at: http://www.ericksonbird.com/maine/index.htm

I took another 60+ this weekend. No focus misses.

Only in capacity (up till now) and a bit of speed but they help make the cam much smaller.
