Located in Harlem in NYC, it is the greatest indoor length (601 feet or 183 meters) of any cathedral in existence and built in 1892.

I've never heard of this place until it was announced that it reopened last November, after being closed for the last 7 years due to reconstruction after heavy fire damage.

These were hand held & shot at high ISO 3200 & bracketed in 3 shots (-1.0, 0, +1.0 EV) for HDR (except the first photo). Photomatix was used to combine exposures. D300 & 12-24mm lens. No tripods were allowed. EXIF embedded in each

Nice shots.

Glad to see they illuminated the ceiling.

Before the fire they had lights on the ceiling pointing down toward you.
You couldn't see anything.

For such a grand structure I suggest you try some handheld vertical panos.

Good captures of the ambiance of the cathedral, which isn't easy.

Hey Dez
This are beautiful shots of this magnificent
old church. I know you picked the right lens to shot
these interiors ( 12-24) and The D300 really shines at 3200 ISO
especially because you could not use a tripod.
The colors of the place and stain glass windows at unbelievable.
I especially like the shot you took showing the scope and length of this
church. And a nice touch of the 9/11 tribute to the FDNY
They are all very good and too many to comment on.
I see you spent a good part of the day shooting the church and a nice job
on the exterior early and late in the day. I am so impressed by the high ISO
capability of the D300. I think you can get the same high ISO quality of the D90
thanks for sharing these

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_largest_cathedrals_in_the_world
Lists that as #4 in terms of size.
Incorrect Don. According to that link you posted (and from the church's site):

"Largest non-Roman Catholic church in the world, largest cathedral (of any denomination) in the world, and the largest Gothic Revival church in the world. The church remains unfinished; in particular, its towers have never been built."

Wikipedia also states that: "The following is a list of churches for which claims to "largeness" are commonly made, and the nature of those claims. This is not a definitive list of claims, and presence in this table does not mean that the claims are verifiable."

In Wikipedia there are several different tables for your review:
  • Claims ("largeness")
  • By Area
  • By Volume
  • By Length
In 4 out of 4 catagories St. Peter's Basilica comes out at the top. It appears that in 3 out of 4 catagories what you claim is the largest is always #4 .

Not MY claim but THEIR claim. This post isn't about the ranking but about the photography.

Do you always get up on the wrong side of the bed? :O

Look at length, since that's your lead paragraph:

It's your lead paragraph. St. Peter's still comes out ahead.
Do you always get up on the wrong side of the bed? :O
I only have one choice, so it's always the right side! :)

Yea, a paragraph that I quoted from the church's site and other sites. The claim really doesn't matter to me.

You remind me of Walter Matthau in the movie "Grumpy Old Men":

Heck churches say all kinds of things all the time. I was visiting a monestry once, in the middle of no where and went to buy about 450-500 grams of thier sheeps milk cheese in the gift shop. The priest/monk at the computer punched a button or two and told me how much it was. Maybe he thought I was a rube or something because he said that less 1 lb of cheese was $607.40

Great shots DezM I love those old cathedrals, one to visit when I make it to NY

Matix - These Photographers are Crazy!!

Dez - as someone who is passionate about cathedrals, I offer my sincere congratulations on a beautiful series. I know the problems of photographing cathedrals. You have controlled the lighting beautifully and if you used HDR, it is an example of how to use it. I wish I could turn out so many perfect photos.

St John's is a fascinating example of how a very modern cathedral can take its inspiration from so many past styles and render them as a homogenous style all its own. Even in the (relatively) few photos on your site, I have found Romanesque, every form of Gothic, Renaissance and a touch of classical.

I tried to visit St John's in 1993, but never found anywhere to park!! I must come back and try again! Many thanks for a wonderful tour.
