Only now I´m getting to understand the hard work involved with shooting butterflies.

They seem to enjoy themselves, though. - Mating and slurping pollen all day.

How close? what settings, lens, etc, did you use?------------Thanks
Good questions!

The image as presented is a crop from the original image, downsampled to 33%.

When examining the EXIF info, I realise the shot is a happy accident: I´ve managed to put it in Aperture mode, but somehow have neglected to turn down the aperture! At least it gave me a super-fast shutterspeed, which was needed. These things move fast!

No extenders, just the base camera.

Here´s the EXIF info:

Hi Kate,

Thanks. I tried again today, but it was cloudy, and I couldn´t really get the shutter speed high enough. At least I know where they thrive now :-)

I discovered that my BSS is definately broken today. - When I shoot a series with BSS turned on, I see it registers the sharper one (in a splitsecond after a series, you see the one the camera selected) - but when I go to play mode, it turns out that the one I see in that splitsecond is NOT the one recorded.

Damn.

Oh, that is so lovely. I really like the way the light works in it.
I agree; it is not easy photographing b'flies. If only they would
stay still!

Mathias: That is a wonderful shot, I really like the light and the added zest of color from the flowers. Congratulations. I too love shooting butterflies and have plans to go at 'em again this weekend. Here is one of my own. Unlike your great shot, I had to rely upon a flash, but it still came out looking pretty good.

Hi Mathias,

As far as I know, the image shown after the series is the last picture taken, not the sharpest one selected. Your camera BSS is fine.

BTW nice shot, I only have a few butterfly pictures. Not easy to get close to them.

With warm regards,
Bimo.

Bimo,

Definately not the last one taken. I tested it. It aint fine :-( (It´s obvious that it is flawed if you tried the camera). I´ll reset it and see if that resolves anything, but frankly, I´ve never had much luck with BSS. Almost like a Bad Shot Selector.

Summer is short here in Denmark.

I´ve shot a lot of macro´s but butterflies are not really that common here, or, they have a very short season. I´m definately going to try again, although I´ve only seen these white ones with the spacy eyes yet :-)

I think this is the best shot, because I got it from a profile, and with its straw in the flower.

Thanks for commenting! - And Frank, nice shot! I´m such a flash newbee.

Mathias,

Wait a minute. Are we talking about the picture shown on LCD monitor after the shots series?

Why don’t you do this test? Take a series (2 pictures will do) the 1st one you shake the camera while the 2nd hold the camera steady; the picture will show and keep the last picture taken. Now take another series; the 1st one you take with a steady hand whiles the 2nd shake the camera to make a blurry image. The last picture will still be shown even it’s not sharp but the camera will take your 1st shot.

Happy shooting.

With warm regards,
Bimo.

Great shot all the way around, but are you sure it's a butterfly and not a moth? My first reaction was moth, and I used to have a book on butterflies/moths, but don't know where it is right now. Would love to look it up. There are some very wonderful moths out there. Whatever, great shot!

There is nothing wrong with your camera. The image in the display, for a split second, after the shots are over is not the one recorded on mine either. Maybe it is the first or last shot, not sure and don't really mind as BSS works wonderfully!

Bimo,

This is the test I´ve been doing! Over and over! And the camera decisively chooses the blurred one!!!

If it works for the you, great! Mine is broken, I tell you.

BSS works wonderfully!
Not for me. Unfortunately. First (a year ago) I thought it was the fuzzy logic determining which one was the sharper one which was off, thus BSS just being an empty sales pitch. But now, after the tests performed the last couple of days, I´m pretty much satisfied that the feature is broken on my particular camera.

Mathias

Thanks! - It´s definately a butterfly. Which one exactly is still to be determined.
