Hi, I'll soon be taking a trip to London, and my plan is to buy a Nikon D300(my first Nikon). But right now I have huge concerns about the lenses.. What to choose??

I'll be needing two lenses probaly.. One standard and one with some tlephoto.

teamworkphoto got a D300 + 12-24mm, for about 1400£.. Then I could buy a Sigma 70-200mm + free 2x converter, at cameraworld for about 665£.

Any comments on the lenses.. Do I have better choices? Better value for money wit other lenses? Are the 24 to 70 mm gap to big?

Grays would be a nice place to visit and the service is held in high regard but their prices are high. Warehouse express are about as cheap as you will find and they have a price match guarantee but in my experience they are always cheapest.

They do have a few stores but not in London. They are a mail order company but they have next day delivery so it may not be a problem for you.

Hi, thanks for feedback both of you!

Right now I'm more interested in the question about lenses. That's my primary problem. The shops I have found, and the ones you have mentioned are almost alike when compared to prices, so I don't consider that to be the problem right now. But always nice to get some interesting links though :-)

24-70 is an enormous gap, right in the middle of a typical photographic range (In fact, Nikon would be glad to sell you a very good lens that exactly fills that gap). If you need the telephoto (I would check on how good a Sigma 70-200 is with a 2X converter; that sounds iffy to me), then get a "normal" zoom lens like an 18-105 or 16-85.

Of course, all depends on what kind of photos you want to take. The D300 will satisfy all kinds of needs from available light (Sigma 30 f/1.4) to macro (any macro lens) to goofing around (18-200) to wildlife (any horribly expensive 600mm).

Nice kit (what did you think about ?)

Nikon D300 + 17-55mm f/2.8G AF-S DX IF-ED £1,689.00
AF-S 55-200mm f/4-5.6G VR DX IF-ED £175.00
TC-17E II 1.7x teleconverter £249.00

Please remind that Grays is an official Nikon Professional Dealer (Nikon UK)

Make the good choice and have fun

Which one of these is your standard lens? I'd consider a fast standard zoom such as the Tamron 17~50mm f2.8 first (though I actually use a Nikon 17~35mm f2.8).

And I'd take the wider and cheaper Sigma 10~20 over the Nikon 12~24, but that's just me!

Greys is a great shop. Great service and an Alladin's Cave downstairs (the second-hand department). However, they ONLY stock Nikon.

There are other shops in central London such as Microglobe. I'd avoid Jessops and Jacobs unless you check prices before you travel.

Checked out microglobe.. not as cheap as teamwork photo and cameraworld.

Thinking about extend my budget a tiny little bit.. Then I could buy D300 + 16-85mm + nikkor 70-200mm.. How does that sound???

Is 16-85mm a decent lens?

The 16-85 is an excellent lens with good sharpness and contrast at all focal lengths. It has some vignetting at 16mm. It tests well:

It's only drawback is the slow speed, f/5.6 at most focal lengths. The 17-55 or 24-70 take care of that problem, for a price.

D300,17-55,70-300vr. Highly recommend Grays. Two year warranty on lenses, maybe 10-20 pounds more expensive. I really do not understand spending 2100 pounds and worrying about saving 20-30 by going to whoever(?) is the cheapest(not directed to you but in general). Also at Grays you will be dealing with a very small team that know what they are talking about. Not an employee that might not be there next month.
Cheers,
