Anyone have D700-Long Exposures?

I know this is probably a silly question, but whats the best way to
keep the shutter open for extra long exposures ???
You have to use a remote control (like the Nikon ML-3 or a much cheaper substitute for the D700)
  • if the shutter speed is set to "bulb" on your camera, with the remote control you push a button (on the remote control) once to open the shutter and once again to close it
  • so with the RC "bulb" (the same as "B" on a traditional speed dial) works like "T" mode you could find on some manual cameras.

I love this picture as I have said earlier. I just wanted to caution you. You have given the option to see the 'original' version of the picture. Some unscrupulous person could open that version and save it for themselves (it is the complete file). You should limit the sizes people can see.

And do what? Use it for terrorism? Hang it on the wall?

Personally i think its a great shot and i really appreciate Ash leaving the original file there so I can see the shot in all its glory if I want to. I really doubt he will lose a lot of business because of it.

What's with your attitude and tone man? Did I say it's a bad shot? I said it's a great shot. READ again! The problem with leaving his original on is that people can steal his work and pass it off as their own? If you don't agree with what someone is saying, don't knock people off- state your opinion! Ironically you found someone else's comment rude here http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1021&message=30542624 and yet you choose to use this tone here.

What a bunch of rude people on here!

What tripods do you guys use that allow such gorgeous sharp shots for such long exposures?

I am considering getting a Gitzo GT2531 for my D700 + Grip. Would it provide substantial amount of stability for very long exposures?

I see now that my post came off a bit more negative than I intended, for which I apologize. I didn't mean to imply that you didn't like the shot.

I still think the chance that someone steals his work is quite low seeing as how most of the people likely to see it are the ones least likely to do it.

Making all your work available in full resolution might be a bit unwise, but I doubt doing it for some shots in between will create any problems for the photographer.

I guess I over-reacted too. Sorry about that! Yeah I get your point on this issue. But I have read a lot of horror stories on forums like these, where people have found their work stolen and used elsewhere. Someone even mentioned that web sized images were being used (not sure how they would print out, even if upsized).

What are your in-camera settings for long exposurs? I typically blow-out everything when taking long exposures.

What aperture, shutter and ISO?
