D700 Image playback Q

Being new to the D700 and Nikon DigiSLRs I was wondering if its possible to get the playback settings to only show me the image without any of the annoying text you normally get with it when hitting the play button. I find this the most (and only) annoying thing about this camera's otherwise gorgeous interface having recently migrated from Canon 5D land...

I managed to enable other screens by playing around with the playback mode options (histograms, highlights and info screens) but none of the options just gives me the clean image without the useless text below it and the annoying numbering on the top right hand corner... this is super annoying as it gets in the way of getting a good feel for my images' composition, especially with darker images, i find it a massive problem...

How do I do it?

Thanks very much for your help :)

i don't see anything indicating otherwise in the manual.

to where you are seeing probably 90%, for the rest you have to scroll.. It is quick though.

This is ridiculous! are you guys telling me there's no way to just see the full image on that gorgeous 900K pixel screen without worthless text and numbers i don't give a toss about?

This is standard functionality from every other bloody camera out there including the cheapest P&S I have ever used...

Seriously Nikon, is this the best you can do in one of your flagship cameras?

Ill buy yours for 1000 bucks if its so useless now....

for You, I'll make it 2999.90, how about that?

Seriously buddy, does this not strike you as a massive omission in functionality or even a design flaw? why do i need to see all the pointless bight (nasty white) eye distracting text when i'm trying to preview my shots for contrast, composition and for fine tuning exposure? this is really getting in the way...

No, I don't think it's possible. That said, though, the image seems to be the maximum size possible without missing bits off the sides for the screen (i.e. even though it doesn't fill the screen, it is the maximum size it can be while still fitting the screen). Thus, because the dimensions of the screen are different to those of the photograph, there is some free space at the bottom. Might as well pop some text there. When zooming (and so when the dimensions of the image are no longer relevant) the image can now fill the screen, and so does..

If the camera is so useless, donate it to a church or charity.

I didn't know of this, either, and join the OP in my disdain of this 'feature'. Does the D3 behave the same?

I was all set to pull the trigger for a D700 on Monday, and still may, but I didn't need to learn this.

seriously m8 if u try to do evaluate things mentioned from ur camera screen... and cant because of the text...exposure etc, u better donate the camera for me.
histogram is for that you know..

I get your anger but dont get extreme whining about about bright white text on your 3000 screen, and answer to question if there was a one, no i dont think its flaw in desing!

You're really missing the point!

1. The numbers on the top right hand corner are actually obscuring a fair bit of the photo - this is stupid. i'm loosing image data for numbers I don't want to see!

2. I don't give a rats @@$ about histograms - i'm interested in light and light composition and layering, this gets in the way of me evaluating these (which is why we use LCDs on the back of cameras in the first place - to evaluate these things)

3. this makes it difficult for me to see the image's composition as there's visual noise all around it and its sometimes (when photo is of a dark subject) makes it hard to see how the photo is actually laid out.

I thought Nikon makes machines for people who are into imaging not instrumentation of RGB values LOL...

I'm not saying this is a reason to throw the D700 away, its an awesome camera (I wouldn't buy it otherwise) all I'm saying is that i'm amazed of such an omission - this is something that every silly $100 digicam out there does! and my Canons (and even older Nikon models I played with) do. so why not have it on the D700?

I'm chilled, no need to be so defensive...

Just go and get yourself some black gaffer tape and tape it over the useless parts of the LCD :-)

Cant believe it!!??,Man asks a reasonable question with a thanks in advance and gets some fa#$t ass#d answers from !!wint say what?!!..

Can I please get a final opinion on whether this is somehow possible, from anyone who's actually bothered to read my post and think about it rather than bash me for daring to point out a negative point about this otherwise gorgeous camera?

Cheers (to all you serious DPReviewers out there ;-)

I am pretty sure what you are asking is impossible. I guess most long time Nikon users, myself included, have got used to it, but it would be nice to have the possibility of an uncluttered view. Send a request to Nikon and I guess there is about a 0,003% chance of them adding it in a future firmware upgrade ;)

Also, I asked earlier in this thread whether the D3 playback worked
the same way...anyone?

Indeed, very good question. I would love to know if this is standard stuff for Nikon ProSLRs including the D3x. i'm considering both as I need two bodies...

Thanks for your help people!
