..I still shoot with a D50 ......;-)

The D50 is an excellent camera. I just recently found out one of it's greatest qualities is the ability to do astrophotography (and me being a physics major, this goes right up my alley!). My D50 was passed on to me this year, after my friend switched to an EOS 40D. I've had it since around August, and have been loving it since. It's a great camera, has a lot of useful features, and is probably the perfect camera to learn on, if you're choosing Nikon. There are enough settings for a new user to learn what different settings do, but not so many buttons and extra features to overwhelm.

There are only two little things that bother me about the camera: not enough ISO settings and the ability to do B/W in-camera (but these are pretty easy to deal with).

Ilan; a question..

I noticed the photos you posted of an early moring walk yesterday or so but this post now appears to be your first post. Did you have to re-register or something? Maybe its just a temporary web site thing.

Hmm... It's my second user here on dpreview, but I haven't used my original one for years now (forgot my password and switched ISP so email not available)

What "early morning walk" photo you talking about? Cause with this user, the photo I've uploaded here is my first :)

My bad. They have the name IlanS and yours ends with a B. And you both live in Israel. Here is the thread:

Nothing wrong with D50..I shoot for a living and i have S3 / D80 / D70 !!

Does the D70 get used..............Absolutely !

Its what you do with what you got that matters.

I'm a D50 user transitioning to a D90 since last week. I'm fortunate that the sour economy isn't impacting me right now, so went for it. I've decided to keep the D90 (just), but my advice to anyone saving their pennies as an upgrade from a D50 is to wait. It's just not worth it - the D50 is that good.

My observations (pros for the D90):
  • Gridlines in the viewfinder are useful composition aids missing in the D50.
  • Commander mode wireless with my SB-600 is a convenience vs. using a cord for off-camera flash.
  • I'm a believer now in the 1-2 stop low light advantage others have claimed. Made several shots at 3200 inadvertently, thinking I'd set ISO to 400. Reviewed several of those full screen on my PC before I realized the mistake (nice).
Things I'm not so happy about with the D90:
  • I assumed I'd be able to catch more out of focus and overexposed shots in the larger LCD. But I still occasionally have images that look great on the LCD which are obviously not when viewed on the PC.
  • Autofocus performance seems about equal to the D50 (I use "D" lenses).
  • D90 is much heavier around the neck than the D50.
  • The controls are close to the D50, but I've missed some shots due to differences. I mostly shoot in "A" so it's quite an adjustment using the front control wheel to set aperture vs. the back.
  • Upgrading may be more costly than you assume. Your D50 on the used market may not bring much. I'm seeing bodies on Craigslist where I am priced well under $300. Seems a shame for such a capable DSLR.

I have never bought a "Current" model camera

I started with a Canon FTB many years ago which I still have and every now and then gets a roll of film put through and still produces the goods.

I bought a Minolta A2 just as they went out of production a few years ago and that is a great little camera and is still used today by myself and family.

My "Upgrade" to that was a second hand D50 which I bought about 6 months ago for a holiday in France and it seems like I have dropped on yet another classic that I will probably use for a good few years.

...............Thank you for the in put on the D50/D90. As long as my D50 keeps working I'll keep shooting with it too ........;-)
