UZi Price Reduction

You are exactly right. I have the C-4040Z right now and I love the resolution, but there are many times where I would like to have a better zoom. So it's a hard decision for me to weigh the two and try to decide which is the most valuable both now and two+ years from now, when 2MP digi cams may be practically irrelevant.
I tried out many camera back then of all megapixels and found that
the most I would ever need to print 8x10's would be 1600x1200
pixels. The UZI was my best choice because I also wanted the 10x
zoom and excellent looking pictures.

It looks like you might still be considering the UZI because you
are still reading the posts in this thread :-)

Please, if your wanting one this is a great opportunity because
they will go fast at that price. If you don't think you will want
the Oly warranty, make sure you put the purchase on a Platinum Visa
or Master Card...they offer excellent warranties. Either way, you
don't have to make a decision for a year anyway...until the
original Oly warranty is ready to expire.

Good luck and let us know what you decide to do.

Debbie
If you can't get past the fact that it's only a 2.1mp camera then
why don't you just pass up this thread? :-)
Because I am allured to the fact that this camera has an awesome zoom.

The thing is that even at the clearance price - your still paying
$400 for only a 2MP camera.

BUT, you also have to figure in how much a zoom lens like that
would cost on any other camera system. Then, I think the UZI may
be a pretty good deal.

You tell 'em Rooski! The UZI is truly phenomenal. It is one hell of a camera in every way.

I went back and forth the way you are doing right now and I decide in the long run ( and for many years ) the highest pixels I'll need is 1600x1200 so that is when I knew the UZI was going to be my camera choice for a long, long time. But that's just what I knew would be good for me.

BTW, I have seen photos you've taken with your camera and they are very good.

I wonder if they'll run a similar close out sale on the C-700,
I already have one, but am considering getting a second as a spare.

I also have the FD-40 external Flash which I wouldn't be able with the newer C-720

Well, I just ordered one...should be here tomorrow. My wife can use
this one.

I believe I will stick with the C-4040 for now, and here's my rationale:

The 3X optical zoom on the 4040 is really the equivalent of a 6X zoom on a 2MB digi cam, because any full resolution 4MP image from the 4040 can be cropped to yield a 1600x1200 image that would in effect double the zoom.

While a 6X zoom is still not as good as the zoom on the UZI, I get the added benefit of having the higher resolution on images where I don't need as much zoom.

Make sense?

It's an extremely fun camera. It makes decent 8 x 10s too. Fun is the key word with this camera. And versatile too..

It does make sense, but it doesn't actually work that way. Here's a terrific article that anyone considering a new camera with any sort of optical zoom should read. It involves a useful number that lets you accurately compare cameras having different resolutions and zooms:

Hope that's useful...

Thanks -

Now I have to get a second job to pay for all this.

After having stumbled across this forum, I now own an E-10 plus lenses and accessories and now the Uzi.

We need to add a "Credit Counciling" section ;)

--You must realize that the members of this forum are an eclectic group of very intelligent people, from all walks of life...They do their homework, agonize over decisions, then make their choices...for some, money does not seem to be an issue and for others it does!...This random mix of marvelous folk coelesced into the majority of UZI owners....there has gotta be a reason.

I would love to have a shot to get my old 1964 VW Beetle at 1/4 of the cost paid....and it had only 40 horsepower.

The UZI and EZI are classics...destined for the lament of hindisight in the coming years.
