I recently bought the Nikon D300 and on a session the other day with
  • 24-70 AF-S f2.8G
  • 300 AF-S f4.0
I missed the reach between those two lenses. I have the
  • 85 AF f1.4
but I believe, that it is to close to the 24-70 to matter.

I shoot photojournalism, portraits, sports and airshows.

I will add the 70-200 f2.8 to my arsenal for two reasons VR and IQ with TC-14E II which should be similar to 300 AF-S f4.0.

Other than the problems with FX (I might supplement with the D700 later) is there anything speaking against this decision?????

It is a fabulous lens. One of the trilogy of must have Nikon zooms.

May I suggest getting the 1.7tc. The 1.4 will give effective 280 focal length which you already have covered.

The 1.7 works great with this zoom. It is a little soft wide open, but stop it down 2 clicks and your in the money.

When using fast shutter speeds where VR is not needed, shut the VR off. I have seen comparisons of bokeh (forget where) in which non VR images were slightly more pleasing.
Best of luck.

When I bought my "baseball" lens, I chose the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 HSM. I gave up the VR and saved a bunch of money.

Since this lens is only on my D300 while attached to a monopod, I'm pretty sure that the VR would be of lesser significance.

If you are going to be off "pod", I can see the VR and increased cost.

You seem to have answered your own question pretty well. It will be perfect for your needs. Even the jump to FX won't really be a problem for what you shoot, since extreme corner and edge sharpness is mostly a landscape issue. Get it. You'll love it.

If it moves, shoot it.

Not at all. I use the 70-200 on my D2x and D300 all the time. I would say that if I could only have one lens, that would be the one. The combo works well with an extension tube, also.
