Henry's has advertised the D7i today at C$1499.99 plus, of course 15% taxes(help) gor those of you who have not had the opportunity to read the ads but do read the Minolta forum. I have my eyes on one but have to 'get rid of' my D7 which I have begun to enjoy, and learn its idiosyncracies etc......not have every thing down pat yet. Wonderful camera, lovely pictures, using 1280, fine as my regular size-quality and getting really nice pictures.

Thanks Peter, I have been aware of the upgrade kit but did not see any notes on the forum recently regarding the release in Canada. Further I am not too clear as to what the full upgrade entails, what the price is, etc etc. I did not really say sell, but get rid of ! Recently my nephew and I were in Spain where he was able to see the performance of the camera, though I still do not know how to use all the combinations and permutations of the various components, and used it on P most of the time, tourinf with a group of people does not allow for the extra time to seek out better aspects for composition. It is a matter of point and shoot majority of the time. He was apparently bowled over with low light capabilities, the large picture capacity of even 128 & 160 CF cards compared to 35mm rols., the compactness, the 28-200 zoom, and some of previous prints made directly from the camera. He had to shoot film and then order CDs together with a set of prints. AFTER he returned home. I did not mention selling him, he offered to buy it from me when he heard that I was interested in the 7i AND my minister of finance has verbally supported the deal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Right now the computer and digital photography are the foremost hobbies in my repetoire, now that I can't do much more involved wood working.

I have good cards in my hand in this game right now. I have read some threads from you recently, and I was in Montreal, when the first set of extremely hot weather came. My favourite bakery when I visit is ASndalos lebanese bakery, try their kibbe.

I gave my nephew my last scanner an Epson 636 SCSI, and he is learning to use it now, in Phoenix. Do not mind parting with my D7 for less than I can get on the open market. It's all in the family.

Will send you some pics, thru your email connection.

Next time you are in town, make sure you drop me a e-mail first. I can suggest a few place to see. If you are into lenanease food you have to try "la Syrene". It's a restaurant not too far from "Andalos", they have the best Tabooli and Fattooch. The specialty is fresh fish. Anyhow, Hope you had a good time. Montreal is aninteresting place if you like food and night life. God knows we have a bit of everything up here.

Good luck with the D7/D7i decision.

PS: Hope your minister of finance doesnt try to steel your job. They have a tendancy to try to do that in Canada! LOL

Henry's had the 7i for a few months now. They got a shipment in a couple of months ago and they immediately sold out. It hasn't been in stock since. Their web site still says "Not In Stock". As far as I know no one in the greater Toronto area has this camera. Not Henry's, Vistek or Camera Canada. I am sort of getting tired of waiting. I think Minolta made a bad judgement by shipping so little. I may even consider the Nikon 5700 if the 7i doesn't come in soon. Or better yet, wait all the way and wait for the offering from Canon.

PeterY, dont tease us about a Canon offering in the D7i class. I really wish they did, but there is a large group of people in the Canon forum that would dissagree with you. Seams that a D7i class camera from Canon might compete wiht the D60 and the G2. Perhaps Canon would rather sell more G2'a and D60 and not having to release something new. But if they do produce something, I'm sure it will be something worth looking into. But my question for you is: Do you know something about Canon's future offerings?

PeterY, the 7i is trickling into stores up here in Toronto (but ever so slowly). I just came from Henry's on Steeles where I saw a guy just pick one up along with a Sandisk Ultra card. I asked the salesperson who sold it how many they received and he said that they only received enough to cover all of their pre-orders. I phoned Vistek last week and was almost on the brink of buying one there until the salesman told me that the ones that they had in stock were, again, for pre-orders. Luckily, I was able to finally buy one late last week at Camera Place Inc (across the street from Sam's on Yonge Street downtown) - it was their only one.

You probably won't be able to just walk into a store and pick one up, get one, you'll have to get on a list or put some money down. I was on a list at Downtown Camera (since they didn't need a deposit) but I took my name off of it after my camera purchase. Incidently, I was also at the Henry's location downtown were I saw a guy pick up a CP5700 along with an extra battery, a small bag and a Sandisk 256MB Ultra CF card.

I guess it's all in the timing, keep calling around and get on several lists.

I got mine in June by keeping in touch with the local stores west of Toronto.

Peter M, No I don't know anything about Canon's plans. But to deny this market would be a serious mistake on Canon's part. Many may disagree with me in the Canon forum but I think something is coming in the D7i class. G2 is a great camera but cannot compete with Cp 5700, D7i and F707. My thinking is this: Canon makes a tremendous effort still in producing the entry level 2 MP cameras. Now why would that be? This is a very important class in all manufacture as I am sure you know. To get people into the digital world and then have them want better and better cameras. It sure worked for me. I bought the S10 about 3 years ago and now I long for something more. G2 quite didn't do it more me because of it's short reach. Just my 2 cents.

-Hi J ,

Nice to hear that you already got your D7i so early, especially in Ontario. Will you tell me what was the damage to your wallet, at that store, and what kind of batteries, and charger did you get with the package ? I still have some time to consider the other alternatives and am reading a lot of the threads in dpreview. I am quite happy, probably in some ignorance of what good digital pictures are, I know little of 'noise' and quite a few features of digital cams. The learning curve of the digital side of photography is a little steep for me. Happy pursuits in digital photography.
