Hi,

I am solicting suggestions from this forum since there are so many professional as well as novice-enthusiastic photographers here. I am getting a Fuji S2 and was wondering which Nikon flash will be best for the S2 that also allows backward compatibility w/ my N90's? I don't want to have to buy two flashes.

Thanks in advance,
The'

Tay,

From my understanding the sb28 will perform all the functions of the S2 and the N90. I currently own the N70 and the sb28 strobe and it is a remarkable combo. I am anxiously awaiting the S2

Tran,

I have both flashes and I will do a test on my cat tonight if you would like? Direct and bounced. I picked up a beautiful Nikon 50mm f/1.4D lens today so you will see sharp as well as greatly exposed pics.

Man! You guys in this forum really excite me (I mean a straight kinda way :-))

Good, honest & experienced opinions at f2 speed (at f1.4 for James).

James, please try it out and post your observation.

Many many thanks!

Thanks Robert! but I think I will pass on the Metz-54 since I have a Nikon N90s, which works great w/ the Metz 45CL. Now, I want a flash which has D-TTL and will be compatible w/ the N90s.

if you have other nikon digital bodys,... SB80DX.... but if you
have other cameras.... 54MZ-3 .....
thought the Nikon sb80dx looks better,
and has D-TTL for digital , the Metz has easier override/setting
controll.

Yep! I know how you feel. I was kinda spoiled when I got a Dimage-7 and sold it 2-3 months ago to upgrade to .... nothing but 'frustration of waiting' for the S2. It's been soooo loong since my last take digital image :-((

TTT- I have both flashes. While neither was totaqlly consistent with the D1H, both seem to be with the S2. (I love it). If you think you want a slave flash, than you have to go with the 80dx, you could even trigger it with the internal flash. That's it's main advantage, otherwise, you might save the bucks and get a 28dx. Enjoy your choice...Peter

Would be grateful to hear from anyone who has the SB80dx and a S1. Are they reasonably compatible, and if not how can one best use them together. My e mail is [email protected] if you wish to contact me directly.
Many thanks in anticipation.

Tran,

You can find my comparison pics at http://www.pbase.com/jajej/s2_tests

Do not judge them on artistic merit. I just did these to show comparsions between the two flashes. They are the 4 cat pictures, 681-684.

Hope this helps!

the cat looks alive

was the beastie drugged??

thanks for doing this comparison

I have a N90s and an F100 and I have the SB28. I have been using it with my S2 without any problems whatsoever!

Hi Robert,

I examined the Metz site, no mention about D-TTL of the 54MZ-3.

SB-28 and SB-28DX can also have 3D multi-sensor balanced fill-flash capability.

Indeed all these models (Nikon and Metz) mentioned can be used on S2 and N90s. Unless you buy D100, you do not need D-TTL.
http://www.metz.de/1_metz_2000/m_pages_english/4_mecablitz/m_mb_produkte/m_fs__54_MZ-3.html
  • Nikon "3-D Multi-sensor metering"
and supports highvoltage batterypacks for fast recycle....I think
another key feature.
just no specific digital DX support,
even has focal length compensation for other cameras,....

Thanks all, especially James for taking the time to do the comparisons. Your opinons really helps.

Slave is good. For an extra 30-40 bucks, I will settle for the SB80DX. I normally like to use the flash off-camera anyway so that feature will be worthed.

Thanks again. Your guys are a great bunch!

It seems the w/ the SB80DX, white is a little more white. It's more visible w/ the direct flash comparisons between the two.

That really helps. I am leaning toward the SB80DX.

Thanks!

Leon,

I have S1 and sb80dx and they work pretty well together. I am a wedding shooter mostly and I find I use TTL and manual settings mostly. I use a flash bracket and the flash and camera are connected via the nikon cord (SC-17 i think). It is very easy and quick to change setttings manually on this flash and that is what I like best about it. TTL works great for bounce light off wall or ceiling. I use the diffuser on the flash quite a bit for close candids and it works really well...nikon should have put an extra one in the box though.

I should note that I purchased the sb80dx more with the S2 in mind than the S1. The S2 will have much more compatibility: flash will zoom with zoom lens, more TTL options, etc.

My S2 may be arriving today. :)
