Bob Myers of CompUSA, FL, just called to say that they are going to run a clearance sale on the remaining UZi's. The price will drop $100 to $399.97. As before this does not include S&H.

Call Bob at 813-662-6333.

As before, I am only a messenger and have no other interest in this.

That should be good news for some. I checked their website a few minutes ago, but they were updating the system. That might mean the price reduction will be up within the hour. They said call back in 30 mins.

My understanding is that you actually have to walk into a CompUSA to buy one of these. You can not order by phone and have them ship one to you. I've tried this route befor on a CompUSA in San Fransisco, which showed some UZI's in stock. And yes, I believe the $399 clearance price has been goin on for sometime. Since the weekend of the 4th, I believe.

Your understanding is not correct . . . .

This CompUSA store is in Brandon, FL. My office is in Portland, OR. I ordered mine on Monday and received it yesterday.

When I bought it the price was $499. This morning Bob Myers (CompUSA) called to tell me he would credit my account for $100 because of the new clearance sale.

Boy, that's what I call service!

How much was your S/H?

Since this item will be discontinued, will we be able to
get extended warranty for it?

I'm sure the UZI is a really nice cam and the 10X optical zoom would be awesome to have, but I just can't get past the fact that this is only a 2.1 megapixel camera. There seems to be other 5MP non-Olympus alternatives, like the CP 5700 with a 8X zoom. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?cameras=nikon_cp5700&method=sidebyside

I recently bought a C-2100 from the CompUSA in San Jose. The assistant manager assured me that if I bought the extended warranty ($79.95) it would cover hot pixels. So I bought it.

Sure enough, there is a hot blue pixel at 1/2 sec., so I brought it in to be sent to Olympus. A week later the service manager called me to say that the warranty was a one-time replacement warranty, and since they had no C-2100's to replace it with, they were refunding the price of the warranty.

Needless to say, I was badly disappointed until I called Olympus and the tech on the phone told me that hot pixels were covered by the warranty, and I should send it in. I still don't know if he was telling the truth or not, but I do know that the CompUSA guy was lying to me.

Mike . . . If you're gonna need lots of pixels for large prints, etc, then the 2100 may not be what you need. You also need to keep in mind that a camera that touts say"8X" doesn't say it all. In the case of the 5700, the telephoto lens is equivalent to 280mm IIRC. In the case of the 2100, its' 10X equates to 380mm. These "X's" are simply multipliers of the wideangle focal length . . . . not of the magnifying ability of the lens.

I looked at Nikon for a time and also learned that their customer service is severely lacking compared with others. Also, the image quality of some Nikon products is not always what you pay for. All things considered, for me the UZi was about $1000 less than the 5700 . . . considering all of the overhead items I would've needed. (I already have a 3040). Additionally, for some pics, I can easily live with 2.1mp.

Keep pluggin' . . . .

If you don't want the UZI...don't get it. This thread is to inform people of the price reduction of the UZI at a CompUsa store that will ship to a person.

If you can't get past the fact that it's only a 2.1mp camera then why don't you just pass up this thread? :-)

Regardless of pixel count, the 2100 produces beautiful, and clear images! Add the extreme versatility of the Uzi, and it's a great camera for the price (even in the current market). As long as you don't need to create giant prints, you can't go wrong with the 2100.

If you can't get past the fact that it's only a 2.1mp camera then
why don't you just pass up this thread? :-)
Because I am allured to the fact that this camera has an awesome zoom.

The thing is that even at the clearance price - your still paying $400 for only a 2MP camera.

BUT, you also have to figure in how much a zoom lens like that would cost on any other camera system. Then, I think the UZI may be a pretty good deal.

The cost of the UZI now is $400 but did you know that when it first came out it cost over $1000? I waited until the price came down to $700 (Feb 2001) and thought I was getting a steal .

I tried out many camera back then of all megapixels and found that the most I would ever need to print 8x10's would be 1600x1200 pixels. The UZI was my best choice because I also wanted the 10x zoom and excellent looking pictures.

It looks like you might still be considering the UZI because you are still reading the posts in this thread :-)

Please, if your wanting one this is a great opportunity because they will go fast at that price. If you don't think you will want the Oly warranty, make sure you put the purchase on a Platinum Visa or Master Card...they offer excellent warranties. Either way, you don't have to make a decision for a year anyway...until the original Oly warranty is ready to expire.

Good luck and let us know what you decide to do.
