I just found something very interesting. If you rotate thumbnails to portrait in XP (through Explorer), and then try to load the images into DIVU, DIVU takes forever when opening the directory for thumbnail view.

One of my biggest complaints that I've had with my new D7i was how long it took to load images in DIVU. I've also read other people's complaints about DIVU being slow, so I thought I just had to live with it. Little did I know that it was being caused by rotating images. I've read elsewhere that Microsoft fixed the bug whereby Explore loses EXIF information, and it's true, the EXIF information is still there (I have Quickfix # 318966 loaded). However, it is still doing something funky.

I only happened to reallize this when I tried to load DIVU and view a backup directory that I had made (luckily) that I copied straight from the CF card. It loaded over 80 images in seconds. In the live directory with the same files, where I rotated about 8 images into portrait, DIVU would take almost 30 minutes to load.

I did some testing, and the rotated jpgs are definitely the cause.

For those that have complained here that DIVU is slow, try loading images that haven't been modified by XP. I'm sure they will load a lot faster. XP also doesn't change the date & time modified when rotating images, but it should be fairly obvious which pictures have been rotated.

So be warned! Don't rotate your images in XP!

Hope this helps others.

somebody posted "Microsoft has an EXIF fix! " the link on microsoft update. See whether it works.

I already have it loaded. It doesn't fix this problem.

Rich - thanks for the tip. I just had a problem with vacation pictures and thought that after I had recovered them, they had been damaged in the process but when I checked, the damaged ones were all ones I had rotated. I repeated the recovery operation on the laptop and was able to get back about 60% of the original originals - which included the pano shots from the top of the Eiffle Tower - MAde my day last night.

Well Spotted and Thanks again,
Chuck

Remove the rotated image from the directory

copy the directory and empty the original

DIVU hangs because it tries to find the thing somehow.... Well in my case i can hear my SCSI disk go nuts for a long time and everything hangs.

But doing this fix it temporarily

And it happens during the buildup of the visible index.

I wanted to chime in with some file handling advice. I have seen several threads that indicate that DIVU can be slow to upload images.

I NEVER use an image manipulation application to transfer images from the camera. I ALWAYS use Windows Explorer, first having set up a new directory by date and subject for that upload. (example: 07.19.02 Kids)

It's MUCH faster to use Explorer. The camera is seen as a "drive", and file transfer usually goes smoothly.

I'll then use AfterShot® to batch rotate and maybe follow up with some Photoshop® work for images I'm really interested in. One could use DIVU at this point as well.

I NEVER delete files from the camera using windows or any other app. I ALWAYS delete files using the camera file deletion menus. There is less cahnce of a camera OS error that way.

My apologies as this may seem redundant to other digital "old timers" out there, but there are a lot of new people, especially people who've never used a digicam before.
