OT: Say 'hello' to iPod for PC !!

Who said anything about the F707? It would be nice to transfer pics there, but I'm talking about buying it for listening to the tunes while I'm out shooting! :-))
Firewire only? That counts me out. Can't go with the 707.....

I think you are reading something that is not there. The iPod is still not PC compatable. While it uses Firewire and some PCs also have Firewire, the last I heard the two firewires were not compatable. To further complicate this, the necessary software to download the music to iPod only runs on a Mac.

I hope I'm wrong but the teenager at our local Apple store says I'm correct.

Your teenager was wrong.

It was just announced by Steve Jobs today at Macworld in NY.

Feel free to check the link again, right hand column:
http://www.apple.com/ipod/

Or else read the press release at:

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20020717/ap_on_hi_te/apple_macworld_2

It will make use of the MusicMatch software for transferral of tunes back and forth.

As for Firewire, uhh... Firewire is pretty much Firewire. :)

Maybe you're referring to a difference in cabling? In that case, buy the right cable. But I'm reasonably sure that the iPod for Windows will pack the one most users will need.

Plenty.

I see you've been around since March 2002. However, since long before that, we've also discussed the possibilities of various devices being used to transfer images from devices like the Digital Album, and whether devices like the iPod could be used eventually for storing temporarily our digital images.

One thing going against the iPod is that it was designed initially for the Mac only.

This marks a breakthrough, not only for Apple, but also for users in that it is now being widely released in August for Windows users.

Still no ability to transfer images, but my guess is that it will only be a short leap away for Apple to include this type of versatility.

"Ahhhh... it all becomes clear now," he says.

And if not, that's what the "OT" stands for, so that you can skip it if need be. :-))

So what does that have to do with those of us reading the Sony
forum for Sony-related camera news?

This is good, but bad for my checkbook. My wife wants one so now I also need to install a firewire in her PC. Will it never end?

Called the store back, got another "older" salesman who was even more out of the loop than his young friend.

Well sure, but I guess I have a hard time justifying at least
300.00 for walkman that can hold a bazillion songs that I don't
have. If it could double as a digital wallet, I'm there!
And I'm with ya... except that I'd probably use it for tunes, too. :-))

Lesson learned: Rarely trust the sale person to know what he/she is talking about. They're usually there to ring you up and not much more. Even in the Apple store. :-)

The Windows 20GB iPod is very nice, but I would have to sell my almost new Sony Memory Stick Walkman !!

I don't really know why in the Apple Italy online store it costs 649 Euros, and in the Apple US online store it costs 499$ (Euro is almost equal to Dollar).....why so much difference??
You Americans always getting the best deal on these stuffs :)))

Since we're so far off the topic here, let me I offer up a (shameless plug) for my original music and send you all off for some FREE MP3's at:

http://www.epigrammusic.com

The site is still under construction but there are 4 tunes up (for now) and links to some great unsigned musicians.

I think the ipod is a bit over priced for what you get. Also, the Creative Labs one is over priced too but better.

I know when the iPOD first came out, they made it so that you could only upload music to it. You oculdn't transfer data from the iPOD to the computer. I assume this is the same scenerio.

Even though it's moving parts, I think I would rather have the Rio SP90. It has 8 minutes of digital anti-skip plus it's at Buy.com for $85 plus a 20 rebate. Oh yeah, it can play regular CDs too.

Once solid state memory becomes affordable, then I would want that. But, I would take the Laptop hard drive mp3 players too.

BTW, LAME is still the best sounding MP3 encoder.
