I neglected to spray the roses for a couple of days and came home yesterday to this!!! Maybe I'll switch to zinnias.

I didn't do such a hot job with the photo, either. Oh well, I was just wanting to document the extent of these destructive little critters. Joan

Do you know what those bugs are called?

They are Japanese beetles...but don't blame the Japanese. I understand our US Dept of Agriculture imported them to combat some other agricultural pests and these are worse than the former. I don't want to sound cynical, but does that surprise you??? Joan

While I'm sorry the flowers were lost, the bugs themselves were great looking! It would have been interesting to see a tightly focused close up, if you had caught one for a few minutes.

And I'll bet you really get into watching all those "up close and personal" medical surgery shows on the Discovery Channel, too?

I used to get horrible infestations of them on my roses in New Jersey, but I have been living in Japan for three years now and ironically have yet to see one of those over here. We have other beetles that eat our roses, but not what we call "Japanese beetles."

I hope I'm not blaming the USDA unfairly. It seems they get worse every year. I'm going to switch to another spray that I hope will be more effective. Joan

Joan, Japanese beetles are equally destructive to trees. Here is one of about 500 I found one day in a tree in the back yard. He was nice enough to let me take his picture.

The usda imported the Japanese beetles because they cost less and were more dependable than their american counterparts, lol.

Yeah, Bob, but you know how it is.... "Don't Touch - Wet Paint" and of course, there's a host of fingerprints in the paint.
