Is DIGITAL Photograhy Photography?

Outrageous! Scandalous! A person's photographic skills should not be defined by their tools or methods of post-production. If the resulting image is one that pleases the eye and is not blatently over processed, it should be allowed. I can't wait to hear about the results of the contest.

We all know that the only real photography is daguerreotypes. ;-)

James, I wanted to say that I thought the same thing when I first read this reply. ForEVER the PC was considered "not a real graphics computer" and you could easily be laughed at saying "I'm a graphic artist using a PC". Mac is a more expensive computer, but certainly a REAL computer (and in many ways, a better one -- though admittedly, I get equal enjoyment on both machines -- they each have their place).

I would NEVER have gotten into video editing had it not been for the Mac ;)

Amy
Ok, so I own a PC, but I grew up on Macs, and my family owns macs.
I find it hilarious that people would not consider them real
computers. They have no rival in graphic or video art. Try as
they might, PC's just can't compete. They have gotten closer in
recent years, but still don't have what it takes to dominate the
market in that one category. Also, conisdering that Macs now run
on a Unix kernel, it makes them even harder to ignore. Many
fortune 500 companies run thier servers on kernels not all that
different than that found on a mac. People just want to assume
that their way of doing things is the only and best way. It is
people like us that help to encourage innovation. So we will have
the last laugh years from now when traditional film photographers
finally acknowledge digital cameras as a serious choice, acting
like they were "with it" all along.

Film photography still holds a few advantages, but this will change
in time.

I have read through this entire thread to the time that I am posting this. I am disappointed to not find out when the judging is and thus, when we can find out how it all turned out.
Good Luck

Sarah and I have spent a lot of time and effort getting a bunch of
our pics printed and framed for entry into the County fair. We
took them in for check in today. In conversation with the
checker-inner person it came up that we had digital cameras. She
told us that we should not have entered the photography division
but the Graphic Arts division because we were not doing photography
because we used a computer.

I pointed out that the Graphic Arts division had no classes for
digital photography. She indicated the digital art class was
appropriate for us. Now as a side not digital art is a single
class with 4 entries allowed. The Photography division has 16 B&W
and 16 color classes that EACH allow 4 entries.

I told her our prints were processed by Fuji just like film
photographers and I also asked if she had questioned all the film
photographers if they had scanned in their negatives and processed
their pics on the computer, as many did that. She was dumbfounded
by that question and indicated that real photographers all do their
own darkroom work anyway.

She ended up leaving them in but telling us the judge could
disqualify them. What are your thoughts on this? Anyone else ever
experience this sort of discrimination. I mean this isn't even
"separate but equal" treatment because we could only enter 4 images
each in digital art verses just about as many as we would ever want
to in photography!

Our peevation was (is) at the maximum! Cindy

Cindy,

You think you got problems?

I tried to enter some of my potatographs in the photography competition at my local county fair and was told they would not be accepted in any of the artistic categories. They would have to be entered in "Fruits and Vegetables" -- sheesh!

Then one of the cows from the livestock division got loose and ate my entries!

I'm going back to digital.

What is potatography? Please see:

Umm, that would be DIGITAL IMAGE, since it isn't really
photography, then it isn't really a photograph....
D'oh! You're right ... but then again ... since there's no such thing as digital photography , a digital photographer does not exist. Hence, none of us on this forum are really here. It's all just a figment of somebody's imagination.

I think I'll go see if I can walk through walls now ... after all, if I don't exist, I shouldn't be bound by silly things like laws of physics, hmm?

Sounds to me like the queen bee of her little kingdom decided you would be the subject of her flexing her "power" upon. Isn't stuff like that so incredibly obnoxious?

I wonder where -her- entry was, or if she can even tell one end of a camera from another.

Well the judging is done and the exhibits are up. Imagine our surprise when Sarah and I walked into the fine arts building to find that we had both one BEST OF SHOW with our pics! Not only that, there wasn't one class we entered where we did not place, and we had a clean sweep in several (1st, 2nd, and 3rd)!

This is Sarah's Best of Show in the junior division (the kitten). Because of regulations she was required to enter junior due to her age, although most of her pics ended up in amateur because the junior division had limited classes.

This is my best of show in amateur - yes it is a 16x20 out of my 3.3. mp camera!

We have stf and all you mentors to thank for this success! Thank You!

NOW, regarding the digital question. As soon as Ms. Checker Inner saw me she told me she had asked the judge whether digital pics were allowed. She reports that he said in the future he would like to see them separated into Film and Digital divisions. At this point I said I hoped that input would be taken into consideration because after all they are both photography [meaning digital is not DIGITAL ART after all! hehehe]. She replied that digital and "analog" were very different and couldn't be judged side by side.

I like the word "analog". At least digital and analog are more equal than photography and digital photography! But it will be nice when its all just called photography again.

Sarah and I volunteered to help set up the displays so we got to look closely at most of the pics. I'm positive that many were either digital, or at least edited digitally. Some of the photoshop work was pretty evident. So we weren't the only ones to use a dreaded "COMPUTER!!!!!

Thank you all for your moral support on this one. Unfotunately I don't think it is the last time we will hear of a situation like this. Cindy

One of my pics did end up getting disqualified but it was only because the checker inners (not the same person) forgot to log it into their books so it never made the judges list. Nothing to do with digital. I was kinda annoyed though because it was one of my best ones!

Congrats Cindy and Sarah! Very cool. Our tandem team!

You know I've always loved that pic, Cindy! :-) And Sarah you're getting better all the time!

I can't believe that was a 16x20. I may need to review with you once again your process.

Regarding the debate, I'm just amused. Especially since some of the "analogs" processed their photos. I would make sure the lady knew that. "So, is an analog photo that is processed in photoshop an analog or digital photo?" .... "Duuuh... Huh?"

Who really cares. You would have beat them too! :-)

Congratulations! This is great, and well deserved. Working hard on those photos pays off.

But you know what's gonna happen? Since most people still can't understand that the photographer makes the picture, they will all run out and buy a "digital" hoping to get the same result.

How many times people ask what is the great camera that is taking my photos so that they can do it to. Sometimes I feel flattered, sometimes very irritated.

It's kinda like the film/digital bias. People cannot dissociate the photographers's talent and/or work from the technology and particular technique.

So true David! I do give my camera credit but on the other hand I've sure taken a lot of BAD photos with it too. You got to have both the practice and the equipment most of the time! And despite our recent success it still humbles me. Just today I was approached by the winner of the grand champion lamb to take her picture with her trophies and animal. Of course I said "sure". Oh NO!!! I just looked at them and they are awful! Seems since she wasn't centered and I just plain missed the focus - of course the wall 20 feet behind her is in perfect focus. Boy do I feel dumb. Oh yeah - the winner of the best of show photograph can't even take a simple snapshot :(. Always remember your basics!!! Thanks, Cindy
