Nikon extend camera warranty
Believes it has the build quality to do so
by Stuart Miles
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

13 July 2007 - Nikon UK is so confident of the build quality of its cameras, it has announced today that it is extending the warranty for every model in its digital range from 1 September to 2 years.

To take advantage of the two year warranty customers are required to register their product. This extended warranty will also be available to customers who purchased a camera on or after 1st July 2007 when they register their product and if they have already registered Nikon will contact them directly to ensure they receive the extended warranty.

Mark Evans, Service Manager - Imaging, Nikon UK said, “We are confident that this will be a distinct benefit to all users and reinforces the confidence we have in the quality and durability of our products.”

Nikon has yet to confirm what happens to those who bought a Nikon camera before 1 July.

We will keep you posted.

The old EU law is the reason. 2 year warranty has been the minimum for many years now, so if they only give one year, the second you ask about the EU law the warranty has been 2 years. But for 2-3 years now I have not heard of any case when the service would not have given 2 years without customer demanding it based on law.

So the question might be why this late? Why not when the law was written? (Might have been something like 5-10 years ago).

What happens if I buy a camera in the UK to ship it to continental Europe, say Germany.

Will Nikon Germany honour the second year of warranty?

As far as I'm aware, the EU mandates that there be an implicit warranty for all goods purchased in the EU zone not less than two years

http://eur-lex.europa.eu/smartapi/cgi/sga_doc?smartapi !celexapi!prod!CELEXnumdoc&lg=EN&numdoc=31999L0044&model=guichett

(search the text for "two years" and you'll find the relevant sections)

So: even if a manufacturer or retailer tries to claim a one-year warranty, if they operate within the EU they are legally obliged to provide warranty service within two years of the date of the goods being received by the owner.

BUT**

The sticking point could prove to be that you're asking Nikon Germany to honor a warranty of a product that was bought in the UK.... this is where it could get messy.

As a consumer sees it, Nikon is Nikon - no matter where in the world you are.

From a business standpoint, though, there is no connection between Nikon UK and Nikon Germany - other than the fact that they both import goods from Nikon Japan. They are distinctly separate businesses and operate accordingly - thus Nikon Germany might well refuse to service a camera that you bought in the UK.

What the EU commission (and courts) would have to say about this would be most interesting... but the arguments and legal precedent required to unify service levels across the EU would take a fair bit of time!

I for one would welcome a set and standard EU warranty that would allow me the freedom not only to purchase from any country I chose, but also to have that purchase serviced without hassle or fuss anywhere in the continent.

AFAIK Nikon Japan owns

most of the local Nikon importers. If they tell you that they don't have anything in it for supporting a product sold elsewhere, it's just blue smoke.

The 2-year responsibility holds irrespective of the purchase country. So you can buy a Nikon DSLR in the USA and Nikon's EU daughter companies have to obey the 2-year warranty. As long as the product is also sold in that EU country and imported by the Nikon subsidiary (or whoever imports Nikon products in that country).

Somewhat off topic but:

I sent an email yesterday to nikon professional services Netherlands enquiring what the conditions for a membership were regarding the equipment. You don't have to buy it in the Netherlands, as long as it is european equipment it is ok.

At this moment buying Nikon in the UK is cheaper than buying it in the Netherlands..

I am afraid to say that TheMadScott seems to be right with Nikon-Hamburg (Germany). I sent them an email and this is what I got:

"Dear Mr XXX,

thank for your request. You have 1 Year of Warranty in Germany with Cameras bought in the UK.

best regards, Sebastian Meyer"

Should I send him a link to the EU website?

Interesting. I have yet to receive the paperwork from Homeserve, the Nikon sub-contractor, for the 2nd year on two cameras(one a D200) but have received the paperwork on the purchased 3rd year on the D200(including accidental damage).

About every month or so I send the same guy in Nikon UK service an email and withing a day or so he replies 'do not worry you are covered but Homeserve has a backlog and you will rceive the paperwork shortly. They were very fast when my wife spent the money but not on a camera bought in Aug.2007 and another Oct 2007 with the Nikon 2nd year free.
Strange?
Cheers
