How many pics on card?

There is a list in the manual. I have a 16 gig card and at Medium size and fine resolution it will hold about 3,800 shots. If I were to shoot at small and basic it would hold 30,000 pictures! I would imagine an 8 gig card would hold about half of a 16 gig and a 4 gig half of an 8 gig.

Probably about 35% more than the camera reports for an empty card. My D80 reports 665 (raw) for an empty 8GB card but I have put over 900 raw images on it.

I shoot Raw (NEF) and JPEG Large Fine with my D90 and I have a 8GB card. Keep in mind that the number of frames remaining that shows in the viewfinder and on the LCD is based on a worst-case scenario. Worst-case is the largest file possible, which is approximately 14.8MB for a NEF and 7.3 for a JPEG Large Fine. Remember that there is a thumbnail image embedded, plus a jpeg image in the NEF file, and then there is all of the exif data and IPTC data.

Shooting NEF the camera shows frames remaining as 541 with an empty card, but the average size of my NEF files is closer to 10MB than it is 15MB, so mathematically the true figure is more like 800+. Jpeg large fine indicates 1.1k, but again mathematically it is more like 1600 because the average size of my files currently appears to be right around 5MB.

Don't mean to be smart-aleckie, but you get the point. Big people will take up more room, and skinny people less, so it depends how many of each you are trying to fit in the elevator. Same thing with photos. Mainly because of color information and detail, some photos take up more space (have more data) than others to store. For example, take a photo of a black sky, then lower the camera and take a photo of a building with black sky around it, and the second photo will take more room to store. Come back in the morning and take a photo of the same building, this time with lots of beautiful puffy clouds on a blue sky, and this third photo will have even more data to store, so the file will be bigger.

Yeah I get it. It was kind of a stupid question anyways. I could have figured it out if I would have been thinkin. The manual uses a 2gb example so I could have did some figuring to come to a round about number. I just odered the 4gb 30/mbs sdhc card, we'll see how that works with d90 when it all gets here.
