I have two Sony digital cameras, a DSC-F707 and a DSC-S75.

Is there any way to change the counter on one of them so that it doesn't interfere with the other? It would be really nice to have the DSC-S75 start counting from 50000 for instance.

The only options that I know of is to reset the counter back to 0.

thanks,
alex

Alex,

I seem to recall a post a few months back regarding a trick to do exactly wat you want. Try taking a picture and then renaming the file (on the memory stick) to DSC50000.jpg. Then take another picture. The next picture (I hope) will be DSC50001.jpg. Then format the stick and take another picture...This picture should be 50002.

I haven't actually tried this so please let me know if it works.

Thanks,
Joe

This works, but Sony doesn't seem to use all 5 digits of the picture number, only four. So I needed to set it to DSC07000.JPG instead of DSC50000.JPG. To test this I set it to DSC09999.JPG and took a picture, and the next one became DSC00001.JPG.

I wonder why they have 5 digits if they can only use four.

I don't mean to point out maybe the obvious, but why not just create two different directories/folders on your computer... one for the S75 and one for the 707?

Alex,

You are correct. After I read your reply, I checked the JEIDA (Japan Electronic Industry Development Association) Design Rule for Camera File System document. The last 4 are file number digits. The standard also dictates what the first 4 alphanumeric characters can be (I didn't feel like reading any further to see what they could be..there was a table which defined them...). This document also spells out the directory structure that is created on the memory stick.

...So...the short answer as to why is that there is a standard that the industry uses....I guess I could have said that first :-)

Thanks,
Joe

If I'm looking for something in the refrigerator and it's hidden behind the milk...I'll never find it, just ask my wife...I think it's a guy thing.

Somehow this situation is related to that. :-)

I organize my pictures by subject and date, not which camera took them. If I take both cameras on a trip then I don't want to worry about copying pictures from one camera over pictures taken on the other.
