Have you tried the new camera profiles on ACR?

Is there anyway to get these updates without buying CS4?

It sucks that the only update available to me is 4.6.?
I was always very disappointed that 3rd party raw softwares did their
own conversion without allowing you to use the constructors profiles,
well that time is over, there is a very big improvement in ACR and
lightroom, if you download the Download camera profiles beta 2 from
adobe labs page,
http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/DNG_Profiles#Downloads_and_Installation

you can use the constructor's profiles which is really nice, and it
looks good!!!
It won't recognise the profile you applied on a particular picture
but at least you can choose from the basic settings of your camera,
for exemple for d700, you'll have neutral, vivid etc... plus the 3
D2X settings.
I love that and it might make me use ACR or lightroom much more now.
Cheers

Those updates only work with CS4

Actually the first beta at least of the profiles and DNG Profile Editor were for ACR 4.6, they shipped well before CS4 did. I'm not sure if there's an installer for the final camera profiles that will work with CS3, but if not you might be able to manually copy them to the right place. And at the very least you should be able to use the DNG Profile Editor with 4.6.

Yes I see these profiles but not a D700 profile. Or are all the
profiles for the D700 when a D700 NEF is being displayed? Seem
obscure to me. Are those D2x profiles for the D700?
Extended Color Profiles are specific to a given camera. Thus you do not see ones that cannot be used with the currently selected image.

The profiles are installed with the DNG Converter. So if you download the latest version (5.2) and install, you will get the latest profiles for use with 4.6 . (Even if not converting to DNG. The installed extended color profiles will work with raw files from cameras supported by 4.6 without conversion to DNG.)

The profiles that were installed with ACR 5.2 do not have "beta" in
their names. Can we safely assume that these are newer than (or at
least similar to) the beta2 profiles?

If ACR is installed, will Lightroom use the same profiles? Or does
it contain its own set of profiles?
A shared location is still used. Both installers include the same profiles.

I started using the new profiles with Photoshop CS3 ACR in August of this year - these were beta 1 versions from Adobe labs. I updated to the beta 2 profiles when available from Adobe Labs. I now have Photoshop CS4 with ACR 5.2 and the released (non beta) profiles that were released with ACR 5.2. I deleted the beta 1 and beta 2 profiles and all works ok in both CS3 ACR and CS4 ACR - new profiles work with both. You do not need to update any conversions you did with the beta profiles because ACR will use the non beta ones automatically.

I ran the Profile editor on the beta profiles and generated calibrated profiles for my camera - I did not delete these, but plan on replacing them with calibrated versions using the new released profiles. These were calibrated using an NEF file converted to DNG of the GregTag Macbeth color checker.

Thanks Z,

But how do I extract the profiles - any idea?

Now its working - all I had to do was run the DNG converter once and it appears that the profiles are now available in ACR 4.6 - SWEET! This is actually a pretty big improvement over the beta I was using. THANKS!
