Hi Guys!!!

Really excited to be trying my first post on this forum :-) I guess for a while now I've been looking at the pictures coming from this particular forum. I must admit, whilst I love looking and admiring photos, I'm terrible at consistently taking good photos and for the moment, I'm very hit and miss with my camera. But I hope that with a bit of practice, I'll slowly get better :-D

I guess my sudden interest in photography is a part of me that wants to keep the memory of my late Uncle alive and well. You see, he left me his gear when he passed on. He was (in my opinion) an awesome photographer. So I've suddenly got a whole swag of gear under my belt and it's kinda funny, the enthusiasm that he displayed whenever he was taking photos I've been told is the sort of same enthusiasm that I'm starting to radiate when I take photos according to my family - this my Aunty does say a lot which makes her glad because she says she sees such a resemblance of him in me which makes me feel good inside.

I love heaps of the posts in this forum just because I'm in awe of some of the results from other members of this forum and I hope as I get better, I too one day can take just as awesome photos. Except for the Ice/Snow ones, it doesn't snow too much in Australia these days :-P Tend to walk mostly around in shorts, singlets and flip flops these days...too hot to wear anything else haha.

Anyhow, I'm posting some pictures here as my first attempt, hopefully you guys can get a mild taste of the enjoyment I'm currently getting out of trying to chase the next photograph. In my work I do a bit of travelling, so these photos are from a few different places around Australia. Feel free to add criticism and or comments if you want (I would love to know how I can improve!). Cheers! :-)

This photo is of a particular fountain out the front of St Mary's Cathedral in Sydney. I've got a few different camera bodies from my uncle. This was taken with the E-500 + 14-54. This is prolly my fave fountain in Sydney.

Here's one of an F18 Hornet (I think) taking off. This one was taken using the E-3 and the 50-200.

This one was taken on the same day. I think this may be an F1-11.

This one was taken out at Brisbane airport. It's an A380 airbus. I couldn't believe just how huge that thing was! Same gear setup again.

This one always cracks the me and me mates up. It's my mate moments before he got absolutely smashed by a wave. I used the E-3 for this also. My Uncle was a keen surfer and you'd often see him at the beach taking photos of surfers whilst getting himself and his camera constantly smashed by waves.

This is one of my faves. Up until this day, I didn't know ducklings could walk on lily pads :-D This was with the E-520 with the 50-200.

I always amazed at lizards and how they aren't scared of anything. I was literally quite close (like a metre or less away) up to this one and he wasn't flinching. Also taken with the E-520 + 50-200

I thought this one was hilarious! I was walking past these two turtles near my local lake thinking they were just statues....until the one on the bottom moved :-P It's not often you randomly see one turtle on top of another just idly resting watching the world go by! Haha. Again, E-520 + 50-200

This isn't really anything special, but I get stung by enough bees to let them be in a photo :-P This was with the E-3 + 12-60.

I found out very quickly that taking photos of butterflies can be very frustrating! E-520 + 50-200

This is a local Japanese garden not far from my place. This was with the E-3 + 12-60.

I have no idea what kind of bird this is, but it was there and it wasn't moving, so I thought I'd try take a photo of it.

Anyhow guys, through these photos, I hope I pass on to you some of the enjoyment I'm currently experiencing by taking photos. Next, I want to try and do some people shots but I haven't really figured out how to do that yet! Haha...Laters!

Ah okay! Haha sorry my bad! My mate is the plane enthusiast, I just went along with him to the air show on that day.

Well you seem to have got off to a promising start. The photo's are nice and sharp and in focus and some nice different subjects. If your uncle left you all that gear then you truly are a lucky guy. I would love to have the 50-200mm, 12-60mm and an E-3. You can't wrong with that line up.

All you need to do now is practice and read up loads on photography and look for inspiration in other people's pictures. Joining Flickr would be a good start. Loads of pictures and groups to learn from as well as here. Good luck and keep us posted.

Very nice photos here! Especially the Japanese garden.

I spend alot of time on the Canon forum because there are tons of great posts and critique there, and these are as good as the best there, in my opinion.

There is light at the end of the tunnel, but it's broken.

Diagnose the problem and Fix It. Find the next problem and Fix It. Just FIX IT! FIIIXXXXX ITTTTTT! FIX IT! PPPHHHYYYYXXXXXX EEEEHHHHHHTTTTTT!!!!!!!! (SNL)

Wow! Your uncle left you a huge endowment of great gear and you are quickly putting it to very good use. I'm sure that partnership will only grow over time.

Hey guys! Thanks for your positive comments. Papillon_65, I guess what I'm doing these days is looking through other people's posts and attempting to mimic their results so in that regard, I guess I am drawing inspiration from results I already know can be gotten :-) I've just signed up to Flickr and I'm already seeing tons of amazing photos which can only make me conclude by saying that there's so much about photography I'm still yet to learn. But I have just got some books from my local library so I'm hoping that will help out with my results.

Haha, I never thought of looking at the other brand's forums Stainedsilver. I'll have to do that sometime and look at the photos they're posting there!

Garry - yeah he did leave me a whole heap of gear, I still haven't figured out what most of the stuff is for yet, but I'm slowly working through it/starting to use it. I haven't figured out how he used his flashes yet, but I'm hoping that reading books will help me with that. I haven't figured out how to use the 25mm pancake yet either. But I'm optimistic that that shall come with time. Anyhow thanks again for you comments guys.

to try to recreate other people's images, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery as they say. I think you'll find most people do it at some stage in an attempt to improve. I know I have.
