Hi all,
Its a newbie question, tried searching in forums with no luck.

when I try to put the lens cap back on, and if the barrel is not all the way in, either because it was not in full zoom out position or in neutral focus position the barrel compresses a little (if in AF), a lot (if in MF). I know there is no problem when its in MF mode, as you're allowed to adjust the focus by hand, but will this cause damge to AF mechanism in the long run?

The way I do it right now is (safe way):
1. Zoom out all the way.

2. Change the lens to "MF", adjust focus to make sure barrel is fully compressed.
3. Put lens cover back on.

Thanks for you time!

The lens cap should be able to snap on easily, without you even touching the lens. Just press on the tabs on the cap, put it on the lens, and let go of the tabs. Sounds like you are grabbing the lens and pushing the cap onto it.

wow, that was qwik. thanks!

I agree. the problem is, sometimes when all the 3 rings in the lens tab are not all the way in, I end up putting little bit pressure.

I just tried to put it on taking extra care not to tocuh the lens adn its DO-able.
Just think I need to get used to it.

thanks!

The lens cap on my 3 cheap canon lenses are all the same type. You hold in the 2 tabs and place it into the end of the lens with no pressure then release the tabs. Not sure what would make you need to push real hard.

After I put the lens cap on when I'm done shooting I push the shutter button to auto-focus, which if not on the first try, then by the second generally goes through the focus range and ends up tucking itself away. If after that process the lens isn't fully "compacted" then check the zoom ring.

Just put the lens cap on.... I really doubt it matters if the lens is in MF or AF. At least it hasn't mattered for me for the last 4 years. ;-)

Looks like the general consensus is to take extra care not to push the lens, just push the tabs, place it at the end & release. wc, even if it moves a little its no big deal.

If manually focussing your non-FTM lenses in AF mode (either by turning the focus ring or pushing on the end of the lens) caused them to break, Canon would tell us not to do it, and we would hear stories about it all the time ... I don't see any warnings from Canon and I don't hear any stories. (Not saying gross mistreatment can't harm your lenses.)

The one thing I would avoid is manually focussing a non-FTM lens when the AF is active. AFAIK, Canon says things like, "Do not touch the focusing ring on the lens during autofocus" (EF 500mm f/1.8 II). These warnings get paraphrased and turned into paranoid prohibitions. But just to be on the safe side .... :-)

Oops, EF 50mm f/1.8 II, of course. :-)

The Canon lens caps where the tabs are on the circumference of the lens cap are a bit of a pain to use.

There are lens caps (some Sigma and Tamron models have this) where the tabs you squeeze with your thumb and forefinger are away from the circumference of the lens cap. This makes it very much easier to take off and put on the lens.

There are after-market lens caps of this type.

Here is a sample. Note the finger squeeze cavities toward the center of the cap.

I have seen those lens caps... but the canon caps that came with both the lenses are on the circumference... if it gets too painful I might look into buying come after market caps like the ones you mentioned.

Still don't see what is so painful about putting a lens cap on. I mean most likely the camera is turned off so the focus motor is not operating and if the the lens moves a little or the focus ring turns a little... it ain't that big of a deal.

Now if you were trying to get a focus lock, zooming in and out and turning the focus ring at the same time as you pressing down on the lens to put the lens cap on it might be a problem.

Putting on a lens cap shouldn't require rocket science....

You will appreciate those central tabs caps when deep lens hood is on the lens

Nikon caps are very good quality. You can scratch the silver paint off the "Nikon" so you don't look like such a traitor. :-)

When you have a lens hood on, specially, it becomes a bit of a pain if the grip to release the lens cap is on the circumference.

If the release grips are away from the circumference, it is very easy to put on or take off the lens cap even with the hood on.

I have a Tamron on, similar to Nikon. I can't remember where I put
the original Canon cap now ;-)
