SX1IS - first photos

:-) Actually, we drive on the correct side of the road :-) :-)

When I was on holiday in Malta, I was told "In some countries, they drive on the left. In some countries, they drive on the right. In Malta, we drive in the shade."

In Malta, I walked!

I have created a new version of this video, converted to WMV format using the Microsoft Expression Encoder trial. I gave it an average bitrate of 12000kbps, and audio bitrate of 192kbps. To my untutored eye, on a PC monitor that's too small to display the dratted thing anyway, it looks every bit as good.

It's 30MB rather than 110MB!

You can get it from http://www.stagepics.co.uk/temp/MVI_0020.wmv

Let me know what you think.

My next attempt will be with Vegas Movie Studio. I have a licence for version 8.0, but I see that I need to go to 9.0 for 1080. I'll run their trial version and see what I think.

Alan,
Could I ask a favor of you please.

I asked this question some time ago and although I appreciated the answer it did seem strange.

Basically I am trying to ascertain what the TOTAL zoom is of the SX1.
I know the FZ28 can do x18 Optical and a further Extended to take it to x32.1
Then when you apply x4 Digital you get a total of x128.4

My Brother recently got the G10 and he says he can do Optical + Safety Zoom + Digital which gives him I believe x17.9

Now... from what I have been told the SX1 can not do the same as the G10, i.e. Optical + Safety Zoom + Digital.
It does either Optical + Safety or Optical + Digital.

That means the furthest the SX1 can reach is only x80 (x20 Optical + x4 Digital), which as you can see is well short of the x128.4 the FZ28 can do.

Thanks in advance Alan.

Can the ISO be adjusted to ISO1600 to take video?

Thanks!
I managed to wrest the camera out from under the Xmas tree, and shoot
a short HD Video with it. Looks pretty good, I have to say - but I
do need to learn how to drive the zoom wheel more carefully, and also
to find the start/stop button without shoogling the camera.

The video is at http://www.vimeo.com/2504489

If possible, can you upload some 80X zoom video taken by SX1?

Thanks in advance.

Why/for what do you need x128.4 zoom?

That's pure nonsens. Buy a camcorder with 800/1000/1200x digital zoom (for guiness book) if you want to be middle of the next children's party :-)))

No it's not pure nonsense. Nothing like it.

If you had actually seen the FZ28 doing an x128.4 zoom you would be totally amazed.

Last month whilst out with a friend who has the FZ28 we saw a bird in a tree but could not make it out.

He flipped his FZ28 right out to x128.4, took a shot and it was rock steady and immediately identifiable.

Hi Mike,

I'm sorry that I'm not in a position to answer you just now - the SX1
is now firmly wrapped up in shiny paper and I'm not allowed near it
for another 10 days :-)

I did find a manual online at

http://support-asia.canon-asia.com/contents/ASIA/EN/0300171501.html

it may be able to help. Sorry I can't give more info.

alan

Thanks Alan..
I did wonder if your good-lady had put the camera under the tree.

Thanks for the link to the manual ~ I've already got it but still appreciate the offering.

Unfortunately the manual does not say anything other than what I mentioned previously.

I may be able to get out into Jessops (if they have one in stock) and check it out.

If not, don't be surprised if I ask you again after Christmas if you could check it out for me.

P.S. Don't worry Alan.... I'll first let you recover from the festive period....hic!
