Without a doubt it has always been my favorite Zuiko 4:3 lens.

ZD14-54mm is the workhorse lens in Zuiko line and great value. It costs about half of 12-60, delivers similar quality but with narrower focal range, and is slightly faster at all focal lengths. It balances perfectly on E4/5x0 bodies.

I'm sorry, but could you explain the "narrower focal range," in a bit more detail?

I got my first 14-54 back in Nov 2006. Sold it with my original E-1. Missed them both, bought them both again this year...I think that says a lot. I've used Canon 17-40 f/4 L as well and I much prefer the Oly glass. It's my lens for > 85% of my shots on the E-3 now. My 50-200 rarely gets used. It's razor sharp IMO and fast enough focusing for almost anything. For 1/2 price of the 12-60 it's a steal. Get one of the originals if you don't need the new features of the mark II and you will be pleased.

it's in my opinion the ideal wedding lens unless you get to the 14-35 F2.0 (if it's fixed finally), and it has a glass quality that makes the images be fine with the colors in high contrast situations. You will notice a jump in color quality from the kit lens to this in a lot of situations- particularly those with high contrast/DR.

I like the lens, but disagree about the bokeh. At least in the situations where I most care about bokeh (portraits using the long end), it can be a bit scary sometimes. It depends on the background, distances, etc., and usually it's OK, but not always. Example:

 
The 14-54 is the reason I got into the Olympus system, and I haven't been disappointed for one second!
 
Hi, I have the 14-54 on my E510 and am more than happy. I love sharp images and I have not been dissapointed. I tried the E3 with the 12-60 and if it were the same size as the e510 and 14-54 I would be shooting with that with no doubt. But it really is a significatly bigger combo and there is no way I could justify lugging it around.

I was so convinced ot the quality of mine, that I did not really consider getting the ZD 12-60 mm when I bought my E-3.
Sure, the ZD 12-60 focuses faster, but when do I really need that?

Sure, the ZD 12-60 is wider than the 14-54, but I wanted to go even MORE wide. Not swapping the 14-54 for the 12-60 saved me a large chunk of the money needed to get the ZD 7-14 mm. I have not regretted that choice.

The 14-54 is still my "default on the camera" lens for the E-3 and performs very well.

but the 12-60 is.

I went for the 12-60 because I had the cash at the time, figured I wouldn't get another chance for a long while. In my case, I find I use the extra range a lot, but I wouldn't have any qualms about getting the 14-54 if I didn't have the 12-60.

Well, this is what happened, Thursday, amazingly, it snowed in New Orleans. As I was using the 14-42 kit lens outside , it stopped focusing. 80$ to fix it. 380.00 to buy the 14-54...just seemed like the thing to do...what about the Leica 14-50? would that be the better choice?

at every focal lenght and every aperture! A real high quality lens.
