I was wondering if anyone has long exposures done with the D700. I'm talkin' maybe ten minutes and more. Wondering how it'll do with noise, artifacts, etc. And maybe best practices. NR on? off?...

Thanks in advance for any links.

ell they are from the D3 actually which the D700 shares the same sensor and noise control. Most of my stuff is of the sky and I do have some downtown shots as well. The sky / space shots were for 5 minutes. Everything else was for under one minute. No noise in any of the shots, Used Long exposure NR for the shots.

Milky Way, five minutes ISO 1250

Orion Nebula, three minutes ISO 1600

Downtown 8s at f/9

I like the sensor- very few hot pixels that I removed in NX2. Noise levels great. Exposures are around 20+ minutes.

Superb work Todd. I assume such sharp photos were on a guided mount. What did you use, or do you have a mate at Mount Palomar?

Heres a novice offering... Not as long as the others.. So far its my first and only attempt at time exposure.......must get myself a tripod !!

This is a 15 second exp' at f22, iso 200.
the orange streaking is the illuminated sign on an incoming train.

The train was moving throughout the exposure.. If I do this shot again I think it will work better if the train stops just before the shutter closes

You images look like something from the Hubble!
Yours are the best I have seen, as usual!

My experience with D700 is that you've got to have NR on, which make the exposure 40 minutes. Otherwise I had too may artifacts.
I wish there was another way around the in camera NR. Any suggestions ?

I have not had a chance to use my D700 for star trails yet, but from my experience at long exposures the D700 has been amazing...

I have done a few of between 7 to 10 mins...it is pretty good compared to some other cameras i have used...

But i have noticed some hot pixels appear on the image if look at 100%.. for that reason i would suggest keeping the long exp NR on...i typically stack exposures for star trails..and take a dark frame and then cancel out the hot pixels in post...heres one from a recent trip to death valley.thats over an hr long stacked exposure.

I know this is probably a silly question, but whats the best way to keep the shutter open for extra long exposures ???
