. . . shoot like there's no film in the thing!

Congrats David! I've bought that lens not once but twice! It's remarkably sharp and definitely the biggest bang for the buck out of any zoom lens, any brand.

Actually just upped the number of squirrel-proof birdfeeders out in the backyard, to entice more subjects for shooting with the new lens, but it is bitterly cold here in central Indiana right now, so will have to wait on the weather a bit . . .
Thanks for the well-wishes!

that many lenses to pick from. But that lens was mounted on my D50 probably 90% (+) of the time. The 18-55 maybe 9% of the time and the 50f/1.8 1% of the time.

Now that I have the the 18-105VR the 70-300 isn't on the camera as much, maybe only 80% of the time.

Went to the coast a couple of weeks ago to shoot the sunset and started with the 18-105 but soon switched to the 70-300 -- there is just something I really like about that lens and it is large enough to get a good grip on.

D@mn the cold, we want to see some pictures. That is easy for me to say, even though we have a storm coming in and there is the possibility of some rain starting tomorrow and running through next Wednesday, the temperature is 68-degrees, might make it to 70 ; )

A Hummer makes his way through a maze of Christmas lights for a sip or two. This was a difficult shot, the camera wanted to focus on everything but the Hummer, have about twenty of these that would have been better but the Hummer is soft and one string of lights is really sharp.

The lights don't seem to bother the birds

70-300 vr vs 18-200 vr in Image Quality.

I got the 18-200VR 3 years ago for my 70th birthday, it costed my children a bundle as it was newly available. It is good enough for single lens trips.

Now, I am tempted by the extra reach of 300mm, also got a 18-55 vr from buying the D60. Wish can get a Image Quality compare between these 2 lens before I spend my money for the 70-300. I will still keep the 18-200 as memorable GIFT.

Since I have extra D50 & D80 bodies (beside the D60), can I get same sharpness of 70-300 NON VR lens buy using high ISO (i.e. 1/300 sec. & up) when using longer zoom. Or the NON VR compares to VR is a different animal?

Dear Gaber,

You are the right one I should ask, you have 18-200vr now the 70-300vr. Please post your review opinion between these two lens. Thanks.

Hi David....good on you getting that lens. I am very happy with mine. It certainly has it's limitations at 300 but I still love it. Graeme in oz

I've always loved taking pictures. Other interests incl motor bike...suzuki C90 cruiser, pushbike riding (just to keep fit after retiring),make things such as kitchens, picture frames, wood turning and other things out of timber (my forte when teaching).

David you're kind of late joing the club. ; ) This will be one of your favorite lenses.

I'm not a newbie on Dpreview, I've been here since June 06. Due to some ridiculous password problem, I lost my posting history. Nice huh?

-I did not realize you(and so many others!) were such a fan of this lens. I do have a question generated from reading the mini-manual that comes with it, tho', and that is that it mentions turning off VR when detaching it from a camera body- isn't it safe to detach if, as i always do, the camera itself is turned off? Any insight into this, thanks! P.S.- nice 'summery' hummer shots!!
