I am a newbie with an Olympus C-2100 UZ, which I love. What are the recommended tripods for this camera? Things to keep in mind when purchasing a tripod, etc. I plan on using the tripod for night shots and portrait settings.

I searched this forum but couldn't find any info specific to this camera.

I really appreciate this forum...I have learned a lot and will continue to do so, thanks.

Go to walmart. They have 3 different ones of different heights. I got one that goes @ 18" to 5 or 6' for 18 bucks. It may not be as strudy as heavier metal tripods but i have taken tons of shots with it and have zero complaints. It has all the adjustments of the more expensive ones too.

It is especially great for getting level shots when taking several pictures to stich into a panoramic shot.

Hi,

I went with the Bogen 3001 PRO with a ball head and quick release plate, which never has to leave the camera even when changing batts. It's a Bogen 3413QR.

Byron,

I think the two replies above mine show that it all depends on (A) your needs, and (B) your budget. Just about any tripod will hold your 2100 off the ground and most will do so fairly stabily.

A cheapie Wal-mart tripod might do if you rarely use it and/or don't have strict criteria and/or have a modest budget. OTOH, a significantly better pod can be had for about $100, and it's likely to last quite a bit longer than the Wal-mart special. It all depends.

I just recently ordered a Cullmann Jet Set tripod. It's not the most stable thing, but it's about as light and small as I could find for a moderate-height tripod (51") under $150 (I take lots of walking/hiking trips, so weight & size were the most important to me). But, that's me -- your needs and your budget will likely determine what you get more than the recommendations on this forum.

recommend getting the cheap one just to see what your needs are especially since you said 'newbie' The walmart tripod will let you learn a bit and grow and if you find you never use it no big loss. You can allways step up later but $100 off the bat for something you've probably never used would stink.

Just to give you an idea. I took the following shots with my Walmart tripod.

moon shots at night require a tripod

This is actually 5 images stiched together to create this pano. The tripod allowed me to keep a steady and level focal plane so my images lined up nicely and didn't have to crop out uneven portions.

Hope this helps. Good luck!
