I asked awhile ago for some advice in purchasing either a Canon 5d or Nikon D300. With the rebates offered at the time, I decided to go for the Canon. Very impressive camera, but the images were not as spectacular as I had thought they would be. I blame most of this to myself, since this was my first dslr and am learning. At a recent wedding, a friend was using a D100 with a good lens and I was really impressed with the pics. I was using the Canon 24-105 lens supplied in the kit. I guess my point is that I was so impressed with the Nikon that I recently sold my Canon gear and purchased the D700. All I can say is the difference is incredible! I realize the 5d is alot older and when used in the proper hands, can take incredible pictures, probably sharper than the Nikon. But I find the Nikon alot more user friendly and also takes an incredible picture! This camera feels at home in my hands. No wonder there are so many Nikonians out there and I am proud to be another one! I am happy with my switch! Cheers!

I hope you enjoy your Nikon for many years.

Welcome to the Nikon world. However, regardless of what camera you use, you really need to put in some effort to try to learn its usage. I can guarantee that if used properly, Canon 5D can generate amazing results.

As you yourself saw at the wedding, the guy with the antiquated Nikon D100 blew you off. The difference was not the camera. But your friend's superior photography skills over yours that was the difference. I am not trying to slam you or anything. But wanted to reiterate that in proper hands, one will not be able to tell the difference whether an image was shot on a Canon 5D or D700 (obviously, D700's AF is far superior to that of 5D).

I still own the 5D mk I and it's pretty good, but D700 is just something else. Think of it as a flagship camera without flagship price (and size).

For instance when I shot Canon (1DsII & 5D) I could only focus with center point and recompose, or choose a point off-center and pray that the subject won't make drastic moves. With Nikon AF tracking system I could for the first time let the camera decide and I can concentrate on capturing the moment. Much less AF worries (i'm not even talking about 'the' AF issue), the camera is intelligent enough so the photographer can concentrate on stuff that's more important.

And another beauty is Nikon's QA. All Nikkors I've owned work as they should out of the box. Not so much fun to look for 'a sharp copy'.
Enjoy it mate, you'll have a blast.

yes d700 is great, but what lens to use with it?
we need 24-105L IS equivalent. I am waiting for months. where is it?

You're absolutely right! As a rookie I have SO much to learn and the experience of the other photographer certainly did show in their pics! But I am finding the Nikon easier to use and am producing some really nice rookie pics. I never faulted the 5d, I said in the "right hands" it is probably capable of producing sharper pics. than the Nikon. But in these hands the magic was not there! For this rookie, I love the Nikon! Cheers!

I'm using the razor sharp 24-70AFS on it.

i used to own the 24-105IS and yes it's very nice lens. however its size and weight are quite close to canon's EF24-70, so it's f2.8 vs extra length and VR.

With film a 30 year old camera could take pictures equal to those from a brand new camera equipped with the same lens and using the same film type. With digital cameras we have computers with lenses and each generation gets significantly better. The 5D which was released 3-1/2 years ago is two generations back from the D700 and so you should expect a difference. A fair comparison would be the D700 with the 5D II camera.

What you have really learned is the much greater importance of the camera body in generating high quality images and that saving money in the short run can cost you in the long run both in results and the cost to upgrade sooner than might otherwise be necessary. This applies to the kit lenses and the 10x zoom as well that are so much cheaper but also more limiting in the images they can be used to produce.
