I am sure this has been discussed before, but I was fascinated when putting a old 85mm ikor H Manual Focus 1.8 lens on my D700 today, I inherited some old lenses from my father and the results were stunning to say the least as far as detail and clarity.

, 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.5 and 18 and 24mm 3.5s, anyone else using and or impressed with these?

Loks like they all work

As long as the old lenses are AI-converted, they're safe to use on the D700 and will often give stunning images. The 85/1.8, 50/2, and 105/2.5 are some legends of the old glass. The "H" letter indicates the number of lens elements, in this case six (Hex.) Nikon stopped using a letter after the "Nikkor" name on their lenses when they changed to the rubber-inset focusing ring, prior to that nearly all of them had a letter indicating the number of elements. These are all non-AI lenses, but provided they've been converted to AI they're often excellent on digital, especially bodies that can meter with manual lenses.

I have a 28f3.5, 50f2, 85f1.8 and 200f4 from my dad, all of them older than 40 years and converted to AI when we got a F3 when my dad saw me using the F quite often.

Well, got finally a Fuji S5 and did a few test shots with the 50f2, not easy to get correct focus (also because the subject is mainly my 7 years old son) but when it happens I have to admit the results are pretty nice even if I can't judge as I am just an amateur if not less (on my flickr I have a couple shots with the S5-50mm combo and more to come), the 85 will be even more difficult to focus, maybe I have to get a "steadier" subject but I find the lenses definitely quite usable.

ciao

I recently bought a non-Ai 85mm f/1.8 (a later version than the Nikkor-H, but still non-Ai) for under $50 at a local camera store and I've found it's a fantastic lens even at f/1.8. It produces soft, muted colors and is very sharp but not unflatteringly so. I've tried several copies of the AF-D 85mm f/1.8 and they performed nowhere near as well for 6x the price!
