I am wanting to purchase a digital camera, this will be my first digital camera, I've also never used an SLR before but am keen to take up photography as a hobby in my spare time.

Would this be a good entry level camera, is it easy to use and user friendly or should I go for a lower specification model?

It is exactley like getting married, for as soon as you'll get one, you'll find a better one with less price and much more features. You will also find out that all your friends have better models than the one you have.... :))))
Just kidding there... Yeah I agree with Juan, you will love it, as we all do.

Good luck..

Anyone considering a G2 should be aware of the reliability issues with this camera. See:

This is NOT an "extry level" camera. I've let several people try using mine and nobody can take good pictures with it that is not an experienced photographer that has used something besides point-and-shoot boxes. Yes it has a point-and-shoot mode BUT you have to be willing to learn what the camera is and is not capable of or you will be seriously disappointed in the results. And, as someone else pointed out, there are many issues with this camera as far as reliability as poor design.

After 6 months I like my G2 and have learned to work around its flaws but would not buy it again at this point. I'd personally go with a Nikon CP4500. I need a camera that will do what I want without my having to second guess what the camera is really going to do on every shot.

I will not say bad things about the G2 because I have had nothing but good results with mine. It's not given me a bit of trouble.

However, you have to be willing to "learn" with this camera. It takes outstanding pictures as many in this forum will attest.

That said, I think there are lesser priced cameras that you would be just as happy with. Perhaps the S40 or S30. They have manual controls but at a much reduced price for your first camera

And there are thousands of people like me who have purchased the G2 (got mine last October) and had no problems whatsoever, but have had no motivation to start long threads about how reliable and dependable the camera has been for us. And many of those who have had complaints, once their problems have been fixed by Canon, have probably continued to use the camera successfully without having gone back to the threads to say how happy they now were with the camera.

The G2 is a great camera for a lot of people. It is not the perfect camera for everyone, just ast there is no perfect car for everyone, nor perfect musical instrument for everyone. If you want a camera that takes more highly saturated pictures, with crisper sharpness without a bit of work in Photoshop, there are more appropriate cameras. If you are comfortable with Photoshop or any other editing program, or if you want to learn Photoshop, and if you want a high degree of creative control, both with the settings on the camera, as well as with the image the camera captures, this is a great camera.

The G2 is not going to give you unmanipulated snapshots right out of the camera that are as sharp and brightly saturated as Sony, Kodak, Olympus, Nikon, or other cameras might, but that's because Canon has chosen to make this more of an enthusiasts camera, which results in an image that is less manipulated by software or firmware in the camera, allowing the photographer to choose the degree of sharpness, saturation, contrast, white balance, etc, that he or she wants in each image. If you want to learn and grow, you will find that the G2 makes a pretty good point and shoot. With practice and study and a bit of effort, you can create outstanding photographs with the G2, with better image quality than anything I've see in its class.

I must be a photographer - I keep running around in circles of confusion.

Your answer here is longer than all my threads on this issue combined, so I can't be accused of long threads of Canon dissatisfaction.

I feel that any potential purchaser of this product should be fully aware of the unreliability of the product and the lack of Canon support. I know I would not have purchased the G2 if I had this information before my purchase.

Any CANADIAN purchasers of the G2 who experienced any firmware related camera failure please contact me off list.

I am wanting to purchase a digital camera, this will be my first
digital camera, I've also never used an SLR before but am keen to

Would this be a good entry level camera, is it easy to use and user
friendly or should I go for a lower specification model?

Also, if you like SLR consider the Fuji 602 - it handles like an SLR! - I also suggest you ak the same question in Forums suh a Fuji, Nikon, Olympus and Sony forums to get some interesting and varied views!

The g2 is my twelth? digital camera. Others include Nikon 700,800,950,990,995, sony s-75, Oly-2100 etc. In my opinion the G2 takes a more consistant good photo than any of those.

As far as the freeze problem, yes its good to know it can happen, but there are cases of problems with many other cameras, the oly 2100 was famous for the sudden death syndrome. There are also defects known with computer accessories, televisions and probably every other product.

Canon seems to take care of problems if they arize. I believe the problems with the G2 are in the minority, and I have had no problems whatsoever.
