5DMKII raw files not compatible with Photoshop CS3 Camera Raw

--I have recently taken pictures using my 5DMKII and set all to RAW. This generated .CR2 files. Before this camera, I was shooting with a 10D and my RAW file extensions were .CRW and Photoshop CS3 has not had any problems opening the files. But this seems to be an issue with the RAW files of 5DMKII.

I went to the Adobe website and they said they would not upgrade the Camera Raw Plug in after version 4.6.30. Is there any other way I can fix my problem other than upgrading to Photoshop CS4? I am thinking, I need to bite the bullet and upgrade to make my files readable (Camera Raw 5.2 supports 5DMKII files). Please help.

--oh thank you for this response. I do plan to get the latest version of Lightroom. Maybe that would be the better solution :)

its really to bad adobe is not going to update the raw plug in for those of us that are satisfied with CS3. A forced upgrade. I just got CSE 3 months ago and am now getting good results, to turn around and have to have a learning curve really annoys me.

Batch process all your Raw files using Canon's converter then bring them in to CS for post processing.

that sounds silly.

So how long should Adobe give away updates for free?

Yes, it does not feel good, but it does not make sense for Adobe to continue to give away something as well as maintaining an obsolete product. Hell, they just layed off 600 people ...

As others have pointed out, this is well known and Adobe does provide a free workaround...

open the files in DPP and then click edit in photoshop, or batch transfer a whole folder of images to photoshop. You do not need ACR5.2 or CS4 to do this.

If you want to work with Lightroom, I would convert my .cr2 files to .dng now to work with them and file the .cr2 files away somewhere.

Then when LR is updated to 2.2 and handles 5D Mk2 files natively, I would import the .cr2 files and delete the .dng files. But I would only keep both .cr2 and .dng if I had unlimited storage.

Perhaps Adobe should support the new (CS4) and 1 previous version (CS3) since many people do not upgrade to the new version as soon as it is released or prefer to upgrade every alternate version - just as many do not upgrade cameras every new version but perhaps every 2nd!

Surely producing ACR for CS3 is not such a huge undertaking as I bet much of the coding would be very similar and with minor changes. It would surely promote a better Adobe following instead of just making many angry and start looking for alternatives.

I guess eventually I will upgrade to CS4 or the next version but for now I think I'll use DPP to process raw (if I need to process 5DII that is) and then continue with CS3 as my manipulation tool.

I'm pretty sick of spending thousands of dollars each year on forced upgrades - doesn't leave a very good taste in my mouth for some companies... I'd rather happily upgrade once every two years - on every alternate version for example. Adobe might not make money on forced upgrades but might get a stronger following with happy customers. If they don't do it then companies like Corel will I'm sure - Corel already pride themselves on providing support for so many formats... Adobe (as much as I rely on their products for my business) are too arrogant and it will bite them eventually (or perhaps it has laying off 600 people?)

There are other reasons why CS4 is worth getting other than just ACR - not sure yet of the benefit vs cost - but I personally won't upgrade for the moment until I try DPP with a 5DII for a while and see how it goes - many say it is superior to ACR anyway for final output!

There's a middle ground between free and having to pay a few hundred dollars just for a new file format (if you have no interest in CS4 I mean). I think quite a few people would be happy to pay $5-$10 to avoid having to add the DNG converter to their workflow.

They've already made the code to interpret it. It would make sense for ACR and the converter to be internally designed to share the snippets for various file formats. It would make no sense for them to code it from scratch for each of them every time.

Not that it's a huge deal. People won't die from using the converter. But, assuming it really is fairly trivial, it would be good customer service to offer it for at least the penultimate version.

The current product is CS4. CS3 is defunct. Kaput. Finished. Just as we've been saying for many, many weeks. If you want ACR to do 5D II, get CS4.

Waiter, hold the 1Ds Mark III; I'll have a 5D Mark II instead

I have not even seen lightroom in action yet, not sure that I want to learn ANOTHER editing program. But, was thinking the otherday of getting LR 2.2 to run 5DmKII raw through and then sending them to cs3 for editing. But knowing Adobe LR 2.2 will probably not be compatible with CS3 somewhere within. So I to may use the DPP for raw conversions then send over to CS3. I'll see how that goes. tired of forking out all the upgrades right now.

I'd rather pay for ACR as a stand-alone piece of upgradeable software rather than have to update to Photoshop CS4 just for 1 camera body.

Upgrading Photoshop every new version does not make sense to every business - it would mean updating the entire design, web or video suite for many businesses who use more than 1 bit of the bundle - for small businesses that could be a big deal.

CS3 isn't defunct - sure CS4 might be a little better in some tiny parts but for the majority of imaging work Photoshop 5 or 6 could still do the job...
