I am considering picking up a 1.4x extender for my 70-200 F4 IS. I can't seem to find any sample pictures online of a subject at 200mm and then a shot with the extender at 280mm.

If any of you have this combo and a little time, would you mind performing this test for me? I am trying to see if the +80mm is worth gaining. Thank you very much.

Wasn't worth it for me. I used it on the 70-200 2.8 and not only does it reduce you by a stop of light, but for me the degradation of image quality wasn't worth it.

I don't have any direct comparisons, but 90% of this Police Motorcycle Championships gallery was shot with the 70-200 f/4 non-IS and Tamron 1.4x AF Teleconverter. A few of the first shots were without the teleconverter and I took it off again somewhere in the middle, then put it back on towards the end. A few of the later shots are with the 17-55.

If you think the quality of these are good enough, then you should be fine. The 70-200 IS version is a better lens than the non-IS and the Tamron 1.4x AF teleconverter is probably towards the bottom of the list in terms of quality. If you put a high quality teleconverter on that lens you should get even better results.

I use the 70~200/4L IS + Extender 1.4x II combination quite a lot. It produces excellent images at all focal length settings (although it's usually at the long end that you'd use it) even wide open, although there is a bit of improvement one stop down. Makes no difference whether you use the original or II version of the Extender, but you can't judge performance of this combination from performance of the Extender with any of the other 70~200L lenses.

I have tried the 70~200/4L IS + Extender 2x II combination as well (no phase-detect AF except on the 1D series, and -3 and -1V from film days, of course). This combination works just about acceptably, which is more than can be said for most uses of the Extender 2x, but does not appear to resolve any more detail than you get with the Extender 1.4x, so there's not much point in bothering.

I'm very impressed. Not only by the lens-performance, but certainly also by you excellent work on the squirell and mostly on the bird. Amazing shot!

Greetings,
Erwin

I agree with Ed, I use the Tamron 1.4 SP, which I believe is the same as the Kenko Pro. It performs well with the 70-200 f4 IS.

when you can tell what kind of chip the squirrel is eating i think that means the lens takes the TC well :).

Here you are, Sigma 100-300 f/4 vs Canon 70-200 f/4 IS + Sigma 1.4x TC:

Perhaps a Canon TC would give a better result?

Those don't look any better than the ones I was getting with the 2.8. Sorry, I expected better photos.

even on a 50D it is still better than upsampling

it's not astonishing since the 70-300 IS, which is weakest at 300mm, when at f/8 does beat the 70-200 f/4 IS at f/8 on a 50D, but not by too much and the T combo actually beats the bare 70-300 IS at f/5.6 and f/6.3!
it's not as magical a fit as it is on the 300 2.8 IS, bu tyeah, it's worth it.

it does slow AF a bit and make it less accurate, at least on the xxD, but even so it's no less precise than the bare 70-300 IS.
